What is “Mastered in 4K”?
“Mastered in 4K” is a phrase from Sony to denote a Full HD (1920×1080) film on a Blu-ray disc that has been remastered from an Ultra High Definition source — a “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray disc therefore, is not True 4K (3840 × 2160).
A “Mastered in 4K” disc is theoretically optimized to be upscaled for playback on a 4K Ultra HDTV using the 4K TV’s mathematical upscaling algorithm. The “Mastered in 4K” disc will work on standard HDTV’s as well.
TRUE 4K-- what UltraFlix is
True 4K or Native 4K content is mastered and stored in 4K resolution — unlike “Mastered in 4K,” it is not upscaled by a mathematical algorithm inside the Ultra HDTV from a lower 1080p resolution.
True 4K content requires significantly more data storage, with an average feature film estimated to be at least 100 gigabytes. Today’s current dual-layer Blu-ray disc can only hold 50 gigabytes — as such, there is no official physical storage medium, other than a standard hard drive. And or streaming from that source.
Those are the facts straight from the source
