The first time I sold a self built company for seven figures, the company itself was not profitable. It took me three years of revenue building in the telecommunications industry and was nearing break even, but a NASDAQ listed corporation bought my company "for the revenue stream". They needed top line growth and were unable to achieve it organically. Shared Technologies, Inc paid me 2X revenue (nearly $3m USD) plus debt.
However Brad and friends did it (hook or crook), it now has value. Revenue + Earnings is the goal but Revenue + no earnings still has value.
