Your post actually became pretty clear to me after my morning coffee. By "firing" for example, you mean an explosive charge.
Long story short, the economical open pit excavation of a shear zone would resemble something like an upright fork, the tines being the uneconomical gangue left behind.
Such an excavation would require an improbable shoring technique.
