A quarter of the nation's hospitals in October will receive lower Medicare payments because their rates of patient complications are higher than their peers. Federal officials released a preliminary analysis in April scoring hospitals and provisionally assigning penalties to 761 hospitals that scored 7 or higher.

When too many patients contract infections during a hospital stay, it could cost the hospital money under a new program that is part of the Affordable Care Act.

Of 58 hospitals in Texas that face Medicare penalties due to their rates of hospital-acquired infections, nine are in the Houston area, according to a report from the Texas Tribune.

The hospitals were scored as part of the hospital-acquired condition reduction program or HAC. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have given each Texas hospital a preliminary HAC score ranging from 1-10, with the higher scores indicating a higher rate of hospital-acquired conditions. Hospitals with a score above 7 in the preliminary assessment could face penalties, The Texas Tribune reports.

Hospitals that remain on the final penalty list will receive lower Medicare payments for a year, beginning in October.
