Southern California has some of the dirtiest air in the country. The 8th largest economy in the world shows no signs of slowing down, with trucking remaining the predominant mode of freight transportation. As California tightens emissions standards for medium & heavy duty trucks, various alternatives to diesel fuel are emerging. One alternative fuel gaining serious attention is DME-Dimethyl Ether. DME has the potential to completely replace LPG, diesel, & natural gas. DME has the performance qualities & energy efficiency of diesel, but can lower CO2 emissions by 95%! Natural gas reduces CO2/greenhouse gases by 20-25% compared to diesel. Unfortunately, it is evident that despite the supposed greenhouse gas benefits of natural gas utilization, CNG provides little improvement in CO2 equivalent & may emit higher net greenhouse gases per mile of operation. DME produces no soot, unlike diesel, therefore no particulate filter is necessary. DME comes from a variety of domestic sources including natural gas, coal, food & animal waste, & landfills. DME is stored at a low psi, so it doesn't require high pressure like CNG, eliminating the need for expensive compressors. DME also does not require cryogenics, and does not deteriorate over time like LNG. DME fueling infrastructure cost is also considerably less than with CNG or LNG. DME has been on the market for years as an aerosol propellant-it's a clean, non-toxic fuel.
