Security will be the top priority at a new 340,000-square-foot medicinal marijuana facility in the works at the Bruce Energy Centre greenhouses.

John Fowler of Advanced Medical Marihuana Canada (AMMCAN) said the federally-regulated facility will feature razor wire and 24-hour surveillance as just the first stage of a multi-tiered system.

“In addition there will be many layers of internal security including physical deterrents, surveillance and intrusion detection,” said Fowler, answering questions via e-mail. “The end product will be a fully-secure production facility with many levels of protection and 24-hour on and off site monitoring.”

The facility will produce 150-lbs. of medical-grade marijuana daily once the four-phase operation is fully operational over the next three to five years.

One of the challenges they face is obtaining a source of steam as a major component in bringing the facility back online. Fowler said AMMCAN is looking at various options, from obtaining steam from Greenfield Commercial Alcohols a few hundred metres away, or possibly producing their own steam.

“We are also looking into the various energy options, including a proposed natural gas line,” he said. “Our goal is to bring the facility online with as little waste as possible and in a way that will provide the maximum environmental benefit.”

The company is also excited at the opportunity to partner with Commercial Alcohols to “utilize the waste carbon dioxide from the distilling process to apply to our production facility.”

The company is planning to hire upwards of 100 employees in the next five years and Fowler said they plan to offer living wages that are competitive for the region.

“As a company, we are committed to providing our employees with a livable wage and a job they can be proud of, for years to come,” he said. “Generally speaking, we will be slowing gearing up our staffing this fall, after we have obtained our final license from Health Canada and move into operations.”

The company will deal with production, processing, drying, curing and packaging of the marijuana, as well as delivery by courier to medical marijuana patients.

The company is currently developing phase one of four, with plans to be open and producing in the 340,000-square-foot facility by mid-to-late fall 2014. The greenhouses were once used to grow peppers and tomatoes under previous owners.

AMMCan is a wholly owned subsidiary of Supreme Pharmaceuticals Inc, a Canadian publicly traded company listed under symbol “SL” on the Canadian Securities Exchange.

Supreme is looking to obtain and develop multiple medical marihuana production facilities.
