The word that comes to my mind for Sylvan is "cartaz", which I just googled and literally means a license to trade in the Indian ocean, but today I hear it used more like "having the connections and reputation needed to get things done". I like the word though because of the older meaning especially. If you didn't have cartaz, you could be sunk by the portugal navy or pirates. I know this is Africa, but there may be some similarities to this older seafaring culture.

Hope they get the Ghana concession for whatever reason!
