2014 Kinross Where Challenge Awards More Than $5000 to Future Earth Scientists

Mining Matters builds awareness and interest in Earth science among youth

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - May 21, 2014) - The WHERE Challenge is a national contest that asks students aged 9 - 14 years to discover the answers to these questions: What on Earth is in your stuff and WHERE on Earth does it come from? The Challenge promotes education and awareness among students about the mining industry and the relevance of rocks and minerals used to make virtually everything (that) they use every day.

After receiving entries from more than 500 students across the country, the 6th annual Mining Matters WHERE Challenge, sponsored by Kinross Gold Corporation, has awarded more than $5,000 in five national, 11 regional and three school prizes. The 2014 Kinross WHERE Challenge is endorsed by the Canadian Earth sciences community, presented by Mining Matters, www.MiningMatters.ca.
Congratulations to the 2014 Kinross WHERE Challenge national winners:
9 - 11 years
Best Creative: "What is a pencil made of?", Emily Liu and Katrina Stanfield, ON
Best Research: "From the Earth to Our Kitchen", Taeya Nial and Jaiden Csintalan, BC

Best Overall: "Brace yourself for an Adventure out of this World", Julie Krug-MacLeod, SK

The three school winners of $750 each are: Montgomery School, Saskatoon, SK; Georgetown District High School, Georgetown, ON; and Queen of All Saints School, Coquitlam, BC.

Mining Matters and Kinross Gold Corporation thank all students and schools for their submissions and invite everyone to participate in the 2014 WHERE Challenge, coming in September of 2014. All WHERE Challenge winning entries can be viewed at www.earthsciencescanada.com/where
