Forward splits are stated x:1 (your example was 4:1). So I would own 400 shares for each 100 shares I owned befor the split.
A Reverse split would be stated 1:x. Thus if I owned 100 before the split, I would only own 25 after the reverse split.
If your example was for a forward split, then the value of each share after the split would be about $1.00 per share. If you really did mean a 1:4 reverse split, then each new share would be about $16.00 per share.
