mlsoft-- I agree with your comments. History from the '60s forward has not been good to education. More money is spent today babysittng than teaching in schools because of it. At present bussing may have some benefit as the only <<" neighborhood pride">> seems to be gang related. As for <<"parental influence and
involvement">> and concern,, there is none. A large percentage of parents are only concerned of someone keeping the delinquent safe and out of their sight for a period of time daily. The choice between disipline & learning vs no disipline and chaos has been made. They are not willing to control at home either. They are willing to pay much more for security guards than actual instruction. Some of these 'school kids' should be in reform school. Additionally, those kids that would benefit from special ed have been mainstreamed which forces more time to be spent in classrooms lowering the overall info avail to everyone. To make matters much worse the selective service draft has been eliminated. Go back a little farther in history to the Romans and wonder if the US is not on the same path...
