Southern Kern Unified School District Partners with Absolute Software to Protect Students and Secure Laptops

VANCOUVER, Jun 24, 2014 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) -- Absolute Computrace Deployed on all Laptops in 1:1 Program

Absolute® Software Corporation CA:ABT -0.73% , the industry standard for persistent endpoint security and management solutions for computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones, today announced that Southern Kern Unified School District has selected Absolute Software for their 1:1 laptop program. This will allow the school district to provide a secure learning environment and safer campus for students and employees while safeguarding their investment in 1,300 laptops.

Absolute Safe Schools is an integrated program that works in conjunction with Absolute Computrace®. Overseen by the Absolute Investigations team, Absolute Safe Schools can help keep students, staff, and school environments safe. All students and staff will complete the Absolute Safe Schools program where they will learn how to avoid becoming easy targets for criminals as well as best practices for the care and security of their laptops.

Computrace has been installed and activated on all laptops in the Southern Kern Unified School District 1:1 program. The District chose Lenovo ThinkPad laptops, which have Absolute persistence technology embedded into the firmware at the factory. This provides the Southern Kern IT team with a persistent connection so they can track and secure all devices regardless of user or location. If the Computrace agent is removed (accidentally or on purpose) it will simply reinstall. And if a laptop is stolen, the Absolute Investigations team will work with local law enforcement to get the device back.

The Southern Kern Unified School District launched its 1:1 laptop program to enhance the learning experience and help achieve academic excellence. All students in grades six, seven, and eight have received a laptop and been trained on the safe use of these devices. The district chose Lenovo ThinkPad laptops because they are ruggedized and designed specifically for students. Through the laptops, students and teachers have access to a variety of applications including digital textbooks, online research, video tutorials, simulations, and adaptive math and reading practice.

"Using laptops and digital curriculum provides many benefits, including anytime, anywhere learning, increased student motivation and helping students master the Common Core State Standards," said Dan Wexler, Director of Technology at Southern Kern Unified School District.

"Our staff is incredibly happy to see students so excited to learn. Our parents strongly support the new digital curriculum and are equally excited to see their students' education flourishing as a result," said Jeffrey Weinstein, Chief Administrative Officer at Southern Kern Unified School District.

"I commend Southern Kern Unified School District for focusing on the safety of their students and employees," said Errol Olsen, Interim CEO at Absolute Software. "With Absolute persistence technology, Computrace, and Absolute Safe Schools, students and staff are safer and the District's investment in Lenovo laptops is secure."
