STONY BROOK, N.Y., June 20, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - Applied DNA Sciences, Inc.(APDN), (Twitter: @APDN), a biotechnology firm that provides DNA-based authentication and security solutions and services, was spotlighted in an interview with the CEO of Pillar Technologies, with which APDN has recently struck a mutual development agreement with wide-ranging implications for both companies. The interview was published in the influential magazine Packaging Digest on June 18.

The Packaging Digest interview, titled "Pillar Technologies secures DNA authentication for brand protection," notes, "Pillar will offer its customers the ability to prove the authenticity of its products by tightly binding ADNAS's SigNature(R) DNA in new ways to existing and new physical substrates."

In the interview, Pillar CEO Rory A. Wolf said, "The opportunities to introduce the DNA product within the supply chain are limitless."

"The collaboration," said Wolf, translates into the potential to "expand the ADNAS technology initially into food and beverage markets, and onto substrates such as polymer films, foils, synthetic/natural fabrics, glass, and natural fibers. Substrate configurations can be in the form of a web, a sheet, a yarn, or a 3D object."

Wolf, who is also Pillar's Business Unit Manager for surface modification and induction sealing systems, noted the collaboration "could extend the DNA anti-counterfeiting platform to products manufactured by all types of product fabrication and decoration methods," many of which are seeing an invasion of cheaper counterfeit copies.

"Existing and new physical substrates, in two- or three-dimensional orientations, are easily adapted to the DNA product," said Wolf.

Many of Pillar's advanced plasma techniques are in commercial production, and treat surfaces for a great variety of reasons: to increase wettability, to prevent pilfering, to seal packages against leaks and to extend the shelf life of products. Many consumers are probably using and benefiting from the technique called atmospheric plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) without knowing the advanced technology behind it.

Wolf also commented on the cost-effectiveness of APDN's SigNature DNA: "Because the DNA product is highly reliable in very low concentrations and its methods of delivery (including Pillar surface modification technologies) are well-established, the cost of product and delivery combined is extremely low."

Dr. James A. Hayward, CEO and President of Applied DNA Sciences, commented: "This exciting collaboration with Pillar Technologies shows that we have only begun to tap the potential of our botanical DNA platform. We continue to push into new territory with this and other groundbreaking development agreements."
