Last month, with a historic bipartisan effort, the House passed Congressman Dana Rohrabacher’s medical marijuana amendment to the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. The amendment is intended to prohibit the Department of Justice, including the Drug Enforcement Agency, from spending funds to prevent states from implementing laws that authorize medical marijuana.

This victory is surely a sign of changing attitudes; with 219 votes, the measure received over 50 more votes than it had ever gotten before. With polls showing majority support for taxing and regulating marijuana and support for medical marijuana at or above 80% in most major polls, the House of Representatives finally listened to the people. Now, the amendment is being offered in the Senate by Senators Rand Paul and Cory Booker.

I’m urging you to support the Paul/Booker medical marijuana amendment. It does not legalize medical or recreational marijuana on any level; it simply gives states the ability to implement legal medical marijuana programs without worrying if the DOJ will swoop in and break them up. The DEA has better things to do than arresting or raiding people acting in compliance with state law and doctors’ orders. When the time comes, please support this amendment to the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.

Thank you.
