I think you may be over thinking it.
Yesterday, IDIX got bought for over 3 billion so when that happens, investors look at other stocks in the same industry and try to ride the wave.
They did that and it worked until mid afternoon...the bids were pulled when the day traders realized there was no one else doing buying.
I am sure a small percentage of the buys were legitimate long term, investors seeing how high valuations can go for a small drug company working on Hepatitis vaccines. However, my best guess is what I mentioned above.
