I don't think the official short interest numbers is the total short interest. As long as you "cover" your shorts before the number has to be reported the official short interest number is always low. "Cover" doesn't mean you buy the shares. You borrow them (securities borrowing & lending is big business) but the short position still exists. I think the real number in FRTD shares short is much more than what is written in the official reports and therefore there could be a short squeeze depending on the details of this merger.
