You also see the same thing on the bid too sometimes from MM's when they have a huge buy set up at a particular price that they're hoping to get a bunch at, while they scare the price down with puny sells until people start selling into what looks like no support, but actually there's huge support.
When they purposely want to scare you into selling, or they want to hold the price at a standstill, they'll put a huge wall on the ask, usually lower than the previous ask (at a price in between the ask and bid). Sometimes those walls are real, and sometimes they're fake. Someone might buy a tiny amount and it disappears, meaning they were trying to scare people or hold the price steady, but that they weren't really wanting to sell any at all if possible.
I noticed usually MM's like ETRF (Etrade) will put the full amount of whatever they're showing on the bid or ask, rather than hiding behind 10,000 blocks. But sometimes I have placed larger orders to buy and noticed that the order was then sold to another MM, who may or may not show the full amount. MMs are pretty sneaky sometimes.
