The United States House of Representatives has approved an amendment to a spending bill which prevents the federal government from enforcing hemp in states that have legalized it’s cultivation.
Under the approved amendment, which had strong bipartisan support, the Department of Justice (which includes the Drug Enforcement Administration) would be prohibited from spending any resources on stopping states for implementing state-level hemp legalization. Twelve states – California, Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Vermont and West Virginia – have laws allowing hemp production.
An amendment to stop the Department of Justice from preventing hemp seeds from being imported to states attempting to conduct hemp research, and an amendment to defund medical cannabis raids, were also approved. The spending bill in its entirety was passed, and sent to the Senate.
