Celoxica, AMD, and Xilinx Demonstrate Hardware Coprocessor Off-Load Through Tightly Coupled Computing Architecture

OXFORDSHIRE, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 2006--Celoxica (LSE:CXA - News) is joining AMD (NYSE:AMD - News) and Xilinx, Inc. to present solutions for accelerated computing at the Embedded Systems Conference in the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

Previous attempts at off-load into parallel and programmable hardware architectures have fallen short of the mark due to technical barriers, price or lack of suitable and easy-to-use design tools for developing, testing and debugging the load image. On Wednesday, April 5, the companies will present the state-of-the-art for accelerated computing and what has changed to make hardware acceleration a commercially viable solution. Latency to the compute platform, advancements in FPGA technology and ESL design solutions will be discussed, including recent developments with the Xilinx ESL Initiative launched earlier this month.

The AMD Opteron(TM) processor with its Direct Connect Architecture, featuring an integrated memory controller and native HyperTransport(TM) technology, complemented by Xilinx Platform FPGA technology and the programming environment from Celoxica, establishes a cost-effective, accelerated-computing platform with compelling economic and technological advantages.

Jeff Jussel, vice president of worldwide marketing for Celoxica said, "To deploy high-performance accelerated computing solutions commercially you need to cover all the bases. Working with companies such as AMD and Xilinx, we have combined our system-level design environment with processor, high-speed interface and FPGA technology."

"AMD64's Direct Connect Architecture and HyperTransport(TM) technology, can provide a tightly coupled co-processor expansion capability and address the communications bottleneck that has negatively impacted compute off-load to coprocessors in other solutions," said Doug O'Flaherty, division manager for Acceleration Strategy at AMD. "Coupling this with an easy-to-use programming environment and advances in FPGA technology, practical solutions can be realized."

"The high performance computing industry is now beginning to leverage the enormous potential of Virtex-4 FPGAs as a co-processor to industry-leading general purpose processors like the AMD Opteron. Algorithms embedded in large applications can be greatly accelerated which can in turn improve the overall compute performance for systems in the scientific and medical imaging markets, as an example," said Krishna Rangasayee, senior director of Vertical Marketing and Partnerships at Xilinx. "We are looking forward to continuing our work with AMD and Celoxica to make it even easier for our joint customers to use this solution."
