Why aren't the shorts covering if a buyout is in the offing?

Because they have no clue if a buyout is in the offing!
Neither do I, or you, or anyone else. This is an example of the
magical thinking that is so prevalent here. The notion that
you have all these "manipulators" with advance information
of all sorts, and that you can read the daily buying/selling patterns
like tealeaves, is in my view a hopelessly wrongheaded.

We'll all find out when Ariad makes an announcement, not before.
I don't think anybody at Ariad wants to commit a felony in order
to help someone else get rich.
