I don't feel confident that brokerage firms do not lend shares from individual accounts to this hedge fund guy here to sell them even without having any margin debt. In fact, you could say that I would be more surprised if they don't, especially Fidelity. This is not only based on general judgment on the level of corruption in the market but also on this past experience with Fidelity conspiring with other brokerage firms (including Scottrade and trademonster). They conspired on, and successfully achieved, preventing me from transferring shares I bought from this hedge fund guy in my Fidelity account as a test (although not necessarily sufficient)to see if I really had those shares. The conspiracy was clear among brokerage firms and they all came back with ridiculous or clearly made later excuses to prevent the transfer even though they accepts the request at the beginning without any problem like any usual routine work.
