borusa, Microsoft already installs different executables to take care of minor differences in processors (even within Intel offerings) such as SSE, SSE-II, and Xeon addressing. Minor differences won't bother them. Microsoft also has different Windows for different architectures, such as embedded and PDA.

At what point would differences between AMD64 and Yamhill cause Microsoft a lot of pain? I don't know, it never seemed to bother them before. In the past they supported Alpha, Mips, PowerPC.

That is why I find the 'Microsoft wants Intel to use AMD64' argument unconvincing.
