Chipguy, Thanks for the perspective. L. Torvalds had some negative things to say about Itanium (EPIC) architecture.

Being am droid, I might like to believe him.

Just the term, Explicitly Parallel, has the ring of a concept that in my computer illiterate mind could be A-Z.

A) a great idea and right for the time
B) a great idea and wrong...
...
...
Z) a combo xx of above

It sure looks like a crossroad though. 32 bit will be good enough for the desktop for a while, but in time should falter. Might be able to say the same for x86. But given the x86 software base, 32 bit short legged, AMD 64 looks to be a no brainer. What am I missing?

When Intel started Itanium, AMD was a follower who got the ISA platform 'rug pulled out from under them' regularly. Lately, AMD has bitten the bullet and chosen their own road. Could it be Intelia are pulling on a string connected to a rug no longer under AMD?
