[OT]—I used Apple’s Time Machine backup to recreate all of the system and app preferences and settings from my old computer on the new Mac Pro. It did this in just a few minutes. Of course, this works only if the external hard drive used for Time Machine backups is not damaged, so it would be safer to use an external RAID drive for Time Machine or to supplement local backup with a cloud-backup service, as you do.

p.s. What crashed the old PC was heat-induced hardware damage to the motherboard. Apple is repairing it for a nominal sum.
