I usually will not ever quote Wikipedia on anything, but this is pretty much what DD is in a nutshell.

It's the research you put into something before pulling the trigger. It's your own personal findings on a company, which is why boards are dangerous if you don't do your own research. It's very easy to follow people to the bottom because of hype.
