Isn't it really just disgusting?

It is not polling, it is social engineering. They are not trying to discover the public's opinions, they are trying to change them, but even if they can't succeed in that, the skewing of the "data" (i.e. garbage) they collect can still be packaged into "conclusions" to deceive those to whom they are spewed.
