From the patents and other sources:

The device which Capstone will introduce at the Hardware Show is a rather simple design but. incorporating a unique operating system which should have good marketability to small and medium size commercial building owners. While it could be used in a home, that is really not its prime purpose. Nor is it really expected to sell to large commercial operations which have full in-house emergency generators.

This lighting device, which originally had a working designation of "Intelligent LED Light Bulb", is a combination of a general area lighting unit combined, in one fixture, with an emergency lighting unit.

The advantage is significant! It is the elimination of costly back-up emergency lighting fixtures, each with their own bulbs, mountings, switching units and power supplies.

But the unique feature which makes this fixture viable is the incorporation of a "power supply management circuit" which can detect the difference between a wall switch (for example) being turned off and a similar loss of power due to a general power failure. (If this were not true, then turning off the light switch would cause the fixture to "see" a power failure and turn itself back on, exhausting the built-in battery.)

Another neat trick - you can incorporate a time delay so that the emergency light will come on for just a few seconds/minutes after you turn off the switch, allowing illumination of the area as you leave.

To visualize a practical application, consider an open stairway in a parking garage. During daytime hours sunlight illuminates the stairwell and the lights are "switched off". There is no need for emergency lighting if the power should fail. At night however, with the lights "switched on" manually, they will remain on even if the power fails because of the emergency light feature incorporated.

This is what I expect you will see the Capstone device advertised to do at the upcoming show.

This appears to be a viable product capable of producing income IF it is aggressively marketed and efficiently publicized

It is not designed to operate high energy consuming devices which would require giant batteries.

It is not designed to wirelessly transmit electrical power from one device to another (Poor Nikolai Tesla would be spinning in his grave if he heard that one!)

Hopefully, this has shed some additional *light* on the subject.
