Zoning issues could put a wrinkle in plans for a large scale medical marijuana growing facility off Manning Rd. in Lakeshore.

The property is zoned agricultural, which allows CEN Biotech Inc. to build a 60,000 [sic] sq. ft. facility with five employees. It’s a far cry from the multi-building 80,000 sq. ft. facility dicussed on the company’s website, with plans to hire 50 people.

Lakeshore Mayor Tom Bain says they discussed the issues with company officials. “Should they attempt to expand anything beyond the use of five employees and anything beyond the square footage they’ve been given, they will have to come back in for an official plan amendment and a rezoning.” A zoning change could lead to an increase in property taxes for the company.

Bain says the town has also received calls from US investors. “They’re wanting a lot of details and clarification on just what size this operation is going to be.”
