I was under the impression that the ZFNs would be targeted perfectly but if they were wouldnt that mean the variable wouldnt exist?

THe genetic variation will be in sequence not important in production of normal silk

If the variable is not important in silk production why would it be noticeable only when testing the silk?

It sounds to me like Kim and company have things in control as well. I am just curious about what the variation is.

hence variable in the Large Commercial Worm from which Big Red (and MS *in part*) was developed

You lost me here a little ZF. The worms used to develop MS were not large commercial worms from my understanding.
They crossed them with the larger worm after they were developed.

99.9% of this is WAY over my head but I understand the concepts fairly well.
Is it possible that they just missed a mundane worm in the BR colony and have contaminated the strain? That wouldnt be hard to sort out at this point but if too many generations go by the variable could be unavoidable.
