APT: The US Army Research, Development, and Engineering Command (RDECOM), Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center (AMRDEC), Redstone Arsenal, AL issued a Request for Information for sources of Heavy Fuel Engines suitable for the use in an upgraded Shadow UAS airframe (W31P4Q-10-R-0077) stating “The purpose of this Request for Information is to identify heavy fuel engine candidates that would fit an upgraded Shadow vehicle which requires a higher horsepower engine than currently used in Shadow.

American Performance Technologies (APT) and teammates Wayne State University (WSU) and Turing Associates, Inc., (TAI) together have the engine and material science technologies, experience, capabilities, and expertise to needed to achieve these ambitious objectives: APT for advanced high-performance small engine design, WSU and TAI for multi-scale functionally-graded materials, cell-structured materials, advanced alloys, metal-matrix composites and surface infusion, advanced coatings for engine components, engine component design to exploit the properties of advanced materials, and material and component test and evaluation.

American Performance Technologies (APT) proposes a 2-stroke, 2-cylinder, air-cooled opposing-piston diesel engine concept using our Case Supercharged Induction (CSI) technology with semi-direct fuel injection and pre-chamber firing to deliver high power to weight ratios, efficient combustion and cold-start of heavy fuels.

APT has developed a running prototype CSI engine. The developmental prototype is a 500cc spark-ignition gasoline snowmobile engine weighing 98 lbs with 128 hp peak at 8,100 rpm, and peak torque of 88 ft lbs at 7500 rpm, producing 1.3 hp/lb, and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) of 0.5 lbs per Fig. 1-1: Kadenacy Wave Effect Through Sonic Boost Plenum and Expansion Chamber Exhaust. The engine is constructed from traditional materials – aluminum and steel. Going to a production configuration from the developmental configuration will reduce the weight by 10 to 15 percent, prior to the use of advanced lightweight materials.

Mr. Robert Axe (APT). Mr. Axe will be the overall project Principal Investigator. Mr. Axe is Vice-President for manufacturing and product development at APT. Before joining APT in 2009, he was group President of the Liht Alloys Casting Division of INTERMET Corporation in Fort Worth, TX, a full-service metal-casting company specializing in designing, engineering and manufacturing castings from ferrous metals and light metals such ductile iron, aluminum, magnesium and zinc for use in automobiles, construction and farm equipment, heavy trucks, internal combustion engines, computers, industrial tools and household appliances. Prior to that, he had a 23 year career at Honda of North America, where he was promoted six times, from Senior Engineer responsible for vacuum die casting and aluminum die cast components, to Assistant Vice President and Plant Manager for casting and machining ferrous components, to Assistant Vice President for North America Technical, to Vice President and Plant Manager for Honda of America Manufacturing for Honda’s motorcycle operations.
