I had even contacted my broker before I did it and they said that was strange.



Yuppers... if a corporate official requests ANY information about you under the guise that they will be sending you additional shares for ANY reason, you should simply tell them that your broker handles all such transactions, and that is part of why you have a broker... and pay all of those brokerage fees.
