And I would be 100% on board with you if the article mentioned that some religious-conservative group paid for the study. But the only funding they mention is, "National Institute on Drug Abuse", and it's a federal government agency.

With going into X-Files like conspiracy theories involving vast government cover-ups of aliens, what ax would this organization have to grind against the medical MJ industry?

To make it more difficult the reporter doesn't provide a link to the original study (or an abstract), but just the general web site. Using that web site's search function, I can locate plenty of studies, just not one that jumps out as being the one sited in the article.
