On deck...defined:

"In baseball, on deck refers to being next in line to bat. In a professional game, the batter who is on deck traditionally waits in a location in the foul territory called the on deck circle."

You know he's got two or three bats in his hand, the bats most likely have weights on them...

and he is swinging them and eager to get to the plate...

When he comes to the plate, the weights come off and he picks his favorite bat...
