Throughout 2013 Ericsson has participated in numerous
live trials, conducted worldwide to determine the readiness
of today’s ecosystems for the introduction of 4K UHDTV
services to consumers. These trials have included full
multi-camera productions and coverage of live sporting
events and culminated with Ericsson and industry partners
Intelsat, BT and Sony broadcasting a live 4K UHDTV rugby
match at IBC 2013.
UHDTV is the next step in the evolution of TV services
and live sports will be one of the major sources of content
which will drive the uptake of 4K UHDTV. As we prepare
for upcoming major events such as the FIFA World Cup
and the Olympics, these trials show that operators already
can start building the necessary ecosystems that will
enable truly immersive TV experiences using today’s
