Wanderer65,First you should know most everyone here at some point had ask your questions so nothing to be ashamed of. second, just know I am not the best but I might help to point where to find answers.
MM means Market makers. Market makers have their own Market Maker ID, a shortened firm name. for example VNDM, NITE, DOMS, ETFC and so on. To see their activity you need to have Level II ( a little advanced trading platform).
In order to see how many are on the ask/bid you don't necessarily need level II. Most trading platform that we use to trade stock show BID/ASK. for example I use Scottrade, and I can see the bid and ask.
