Well sometimes a spade is a bit more....

* a playing card in the major suit that has one or more black figures on it; "she led a low spade"; "spades were trumps"
* a sturdy hand shovel that can be pushed into the earth with the foot
* nigger: (ethnic slur) extremely offensive name for a Black person; "only a Black can call another Black a nigga"
* dig (up) with a spade; "I spade compost into the flower beds"

* In gardening, a spade is a hand tool used to dig ground, or to break up clumps in the soil. It is sometimes considered a type of shovel. It consists of a handle with a metal blade.

* A common speaker connector. Available with both solder and solder-less connections, the gold plated spade lugs shown feature a solder-less "compression" design for rear wire entry. The main advantage of spades is that they offer a large contact surface area. The main disadvantage is that it can be difficult to connect several spades in a tight area (such as the back of a receiver).

* a digging tool, the handle is grasped and the foot used to push the blade into the ground.

* Referring to the shape of a shield occuring in the design of a coin. British "spade', sometimes 'spade ace' guineas are so called for this reason.

* Also a spade-Mashie. A deep faced ancient club whose modern equivalent is the 6 iron.
