Hap was a NR Artillery officer in Nam, from all that he writes it must have been the highpoint of his life.
From all he writes, he really got his jollies blowing people up.
I mean a couple of years ago he was arguing the slander to suggest we lost in Nam, and got off on how many many many more we killed of them than they killed us.
I thought he was going to have an orgasm, you sense his excitement.
Fortunately, Hap represents the significant minority of vets, he is the General Jack T.Ripper type.
Also, for the record i never saw nor was told of a Vietnam Vet being spit on coming home, sure there were cases, but they were few.
No parades, no heroing ceremonies, no rewards; and getting hit with anti-war arguments, etc.etc: true.
It was anti-Johnson anti-Nixon, anti-McNamara, anti-Kissinger,anti-the Vietnam War
My wife's brother came home to real Red White and Blue coal mining town in Pa. and there was no anti-war flack to him in that towm.
But he commited suicide anyway.
He went in a lifelong sweet, humorous kid.
He was drafted at 18, spent a year in Nam that we can only intuite, he was involved in , or saw things, he didn't want to talk about.
My wife was in his town visiting the day , the last day, when the news was showing people hanging from helicopters, the day we fled Nam.
And as he watched the news he was just giving nervous, sardonic moments giggle--not happy laugh, giggle, nervous, super edgy.
That week he climbed into a empty box car and blew his brains out.
His date of death was not fixed because it was days before his body was discovered.
This is what is called tragedy.
On Mike's birthday my wife still sometimes will cry, and says i keep thinking of Mikey in a corner when he was little in a corner going through "I am just a lonely petunia in an Onion patch, boohoo, boohoo" routine for all.
Yeh we really won that war per Hap's definition.
But then Hap has demonstrated he loved it!!!! Loved war!! and o yes, per Hap, we won because we butchered those worthless Gooks to bloody hell.
