Studio Profit Report: Who's Up and Who's Down
5:05 AM PST 2/21/2014 by Georg Szalai, Paul Bond
The six major film studios combined to generate more than $4.3 billion in operating profit in 2013, up 23 percent from $3.5 billion in 2012, as digital streaming offset declining DVD sales and franchise films remained strong. But the riches were not spread equally.

Is Hollywood's biggest money-maker:
a) Movies?
b) DVDs?
c) Television?

The best-kept secret in Hollywood, especially from Wall Street, is that the movie studios' biggest profit center is not theatrical movies, or even DVD sales; it is TV licensing.

The reason a majority of movie studios still turn a profit most years is that they have found ways to, as they say, monetize the ancillary stream by selling pay-TV and overseas rights, creating tie-in video games, amusement-park rides and so forth. And the big hits, rare as they may be, pay for a lot of flops. Still, the profits are not huge. Matthew Lieberman, a director at Pricewaterhouse Coopers, expects growth over the coming years to be somewhere around 0.6 percent.
