That number stinks
Of course it does. I would expect 97-98%.
morrowinder
Andy is an old process guy and I would think he would have a fair understanding of yields and reasonable expectations. He and I have discussed the matter from time to time. We used to butt heads but we both seem to have let that go. Water under the bridge.
Andy
the Ryzen 8 core die is about 200mm^2......... for that there is NO doubt...............the doubt is the claim (in that piece) of 80% yields...
At 200mm2 no one, including Intel is going to get 80% yield on all 8 cores much less upwards of 80% as the article claimed. Today's yields just aren't what they used to be due to lithography limitations and double and triple patterning and it wouldn't have been possible to hit those numbers 10-15 years ago on a consistent basis. They may be referring to line yield which is sometimes quoted but that's just the number of wafers that make it through the fab without getting broken or otherwise become unusable prior to sort. I remember years ago AMD quoted their yield as 95% in response to an analyst's inquiry and the fans went wild. It was obviously line yield the AMD spokesperson was referring to. Even Intel's legendary yields aren't what they used to be.
morrowinder
I must confess to being somewhat confused as to which chip is exactly what size but I can tell you that 80% yield for a 44mm2 die is not at all exceptional. For a considerably larger die it is out of the question.
fpg
You should goggle an 8-core 16 thread Intel chip, before you decide to use this metric to "criticize" Zen...
I'm not criticizing zen, just those who crow about the unconfirmed yield reports and BTW, the Intel chip includes a graphics processor while the zen chip does not.
borusa
I did a goggle search on Zen die size. If I'm wrong please correct me and I'll rerun the die size through my yield model.
Andy
According to our sources, Ryzen yields are very high at the present moment. About 80% of Ryzen dies have all 8 cores fully functional
Ricin is 44mm2. 80% yield is not very impressive.
That's good Morry, you still got your sense of humor
I didn't think he was joking...
Please stop living in the past. You need to debitter
Look at your post.
I don't think Intel will be giving Dell Six Billion Dollars any more, lets look to the future
Do you notice a bitter backwards gaze? Perhaps it's time you looked to the future and stopped living in your imaginary past? AMD has a bright future. Start living in it.
Bozo
I don't think Intel will be giving Dell Six Billion Dollars any more
Intel never gave Dell $6 Billion. That was an invention of your twisted logic. You can't "give" someone their own money. It's too bad you can't give that up.
Concentrate on the positive.
I think it's time to judge them by their current management
borusa
we may differ on some of the details of the past
Maybe but perhaps we can agree that it's time to move on.
borusa
Despite AMD's nefarious past, I think it's time to judge them by their current management. Even Rory Reed was only a hapless boob and Dirkless before him was only trying to work with the disaster left to him. AMD makes a wonderful covered call vehicle at this time.

There is no need for such abuse. Knock it off.
Bozo
Zen is not Bulldozer
Don't forget to mention Barfalona...
Well, couldn't they be a victim of Intel's competence
Certainly but your phrasing implied malevolence.
Bozo
all along for the last ten years Intel has had it's foot on AMD's throat
Still living in the past with you fantasies. AMD was a victim of their own incompetence. Nothing more.
borusa
Intel is looking to test the upper bound of $38.50
What ticker are you watching?
morrowinder
The bulk of the profit comes from places AMD is still not competitive. And they won't even be there for months
Months isn't very far off and AMD seems to have a competitive product, at least on paper. The question is, can they produce it in volume and at a profit? It's possible they can and Intel investors need to take notice.
TCaE
Intel didn't introduce a 22nm FDSOI process
You're right, I misread.
I can stop gasping now.
Intel gives details of it's 10nm process and introduces a (gasp) 22nm FD-SOI process...

I think they feel they're getting even for all the years Intel fans abused AMD. I must admit we were pretty hard on them...
Ignore them if you don't like them.
Koog
if you are a white heterosexual male stockholder, there is NOTHING in it for you
What do you mean there's nothing in it for you? You get to be self righteous, feel superior and tell yourself how noble you are...
To solve the issue, BIOS microcode must be updated for the AMD Ryzen’s integrated memory controller and it should arrive within a couple of months."
A couple of months?
How do we interpret such a long delay? Does it need to go thru validation before they ship the bug fix?
borusa
Dolores
OK, I guess I'm a little slow today. What would that morph into?
Intel has 9 or 10 times the number of employees at AMD. Now we know what they do
All the more reason for you to apply for a job there.
Ahh Nipple validation..I see your point!!
It works best in a cold room...
Are you telling me FB, Google, etc will accept this level of quality control in their datacentres on Naples which runs the exact same cores and if anything is more complex due to its MCM arrangement ?
No, they'll require a much higher level of validation on Nipples than they would on a desktop chip and they'll do their own validation on top of AMD's. That's why AMD is at a real disadvantage here. They don't have the validation suite/infrastructure that only years of experience can provide. I've been in the validation labs. The row after row of countless systems running 24/7 for months just to get to a 80% confidence level where an obscure bug is found. Do a stepping and start all over again. You can't avoid that.
Ryzen 7 Chips Are Locking Up PCs
If it were an Intel chip it would be all over the headlines.
morrowinder
But then I poked around on HP, Dell's websites. Not one Ryzen based machine
Any second now someone will claim Intel is threatening them if they sell AMD machines...
Bozo
You know I have been abrasive to many here
Just a chronic whiner.
Bozo
It is not so much hate for inteL as love for freedom of choice.
No, it's your hate for Intel and you obsession over something long relegated to the dustbin of history.
fpg
I'm sorry if my comments about Intel hurt your feelings
Good Lord. You don't have what it takes to hurt my feelings. I don't even want to argue with you anymore.
borusa
I am not an amdroid. To be one you must have a incurable pathological hatred of Intel. I'm only disgusted...
borusa
Lotta folks dismiss TA as voodoo. Here goes anyway
So do you think it's real and you're shorting or buying Puts or not?
Otherwise why did you post?
Ahhhh the pissing wars.
FPG, you must feel alive again.
I have been reminding anyone who cares to know
No one cares.
fpg
The posts are sitting right there in the thread Elmer, your history-rewriting schtick is old and lame...
I made it clear who I was referring to.
He's[>>Bozo<<] been whining for many years about Intel's rebates to Dell in the 2000s.
You made a simple error. No need to feel disgraced.
Move on.
We've established that you got a little fuzzy with who was talking to who in this thread
I clearly established that I was referring to Bozo and you missed it.
He's[Bozo] been whining for many years about Intel's rebates to Dell in the 2000s.
Actually I was talking about mobile
So you're Bozo?
