$OPTT this is some good news, The autonomous offshore platform will eventually power a suite of oceanographic sensors and transmit real-time environmental data to a dedicated shore station studying the potential effect of marine energy under real-world sea conditions with minimal carbon footprint.
$OPTT Especially suited for the offshore wind energy market, the Saab Seaeye Cougar XT Compact robotic vehicle has been chosen for Taiwan’s huge offshore wind farm development.
Taiwan’s Metal Industries Research and Development Centre (MIRDC) will train ROV pilots to assist in the development and maintenance of the turbines’ underwater structures.
The training will be undertaken by MIRDC at the Maritime Technology Innovation Centre created by the Bureau of Energy and the Ministry of Economic Affairs for the cultivation of national offshore wind energy talents.
Created for currents
Created for challenging environmental conditions inherent in shallow water operations the Seaeye low-profile 300m rated Cougar XT Compact is specially designed to minimise the effect of current, with a reduced frame size, buoyancy and weight — and a thinner 17mm tether cable that reduces the effect of drag.
Its six powerful thrusters hold the Cougar steady in strong cross currents and allow it to operate with precise manoeuvrability around structures whilst handling a wide array of equipment that can include cameras, sonar, tracking systems and manipulators.
MIRDC’s Cougar XT Compact comes with a Kongsberg colour zoom camera, Blueview multibeam sonar, Tritec SeaKing sidescan sonar, Cygnus ultrasonic thickness gauge, CP contact probe and a four-function manipulator. It also comes as a free-swimming option and has its own 16 ft control cabin.
At the Maritime Technology Innovation Centre, the offshore wind energy training courses organised by MIRDC will provide training and certification in Taiwan and for the Asia Pacific region.
Here's some older OPT news that may have some significance to the above news.

Groundbreaking Carbon-Free Autonomous Subsea Vehicle Residency Solution Advances
Ocean Power Technologies, Modus Seabed Intervention & Saab Seaeye Project Seeks U.S. Government Funding
MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J., March 10, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: OPTT), a leader in innovative and cost-effective ocean energy solutions, today announced that it is working on a groundbreaking solution for carbon-free subsea autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) residency – long-term, persistent deployment without support from manned vessels – with joint development partners Modus Seabed Intervention and Saab Seaeye.
Ocean Power Technologies’ PB3 PowerBuoy® wave energy converter is pictured with innovative single point mooring integrating power and data transmission connected to a subsea battery solution and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) charging station. Developed with Modus Seabed Intervention utilizing a Saab Seaeye Sabertooth AUV, the concept has been submitted for U.S. government development and demonstration project funding consideration.
“We believe a self-contained system powered by an OPT PowerBuoy® and exempt from existing ocean infrastructure has the potential to revolutionize the industrial use of AUVs and make long-term residency a cost-effective reality,” said George Kirby, OPT President and Chief Executive Officer.
“Modus Seabed Intervention’s experience with advanced technology development efforts in subsea docking with Saab Seaeye’s market-leading hybrid AUV (HAUV) enables autonomous offshore operations and we believe it is a natural fit for our environmentally sound PowerBuoy® ocean power and communications technology,” Kirby added. “We’re looking forward to working together to further support the growing offshore electrification market.”
Remote operation without the need for surface vessel support or complex power and data umbilical cable systems to offshore platforms or land has the potential to offer tremendous savings over operations that would otherwise require manned vessels – including long-term environmental monitoring, frequent subsea equipment integrity inspections, and interaction with seafloor assets.
This novel system is designed for carbon-free autonomous offshore operations with the OPT PowerBuoy® power and communications platform at its core. Via an innovative integrated mooring and subsea power/data transmission cable, a PowerBuoy® can provide carbon-free power to a seabed docking station to recharge an autonomous underwater vehicle while enabling secure data transmission to and from shore-based operations located anywhere in the world.
The autonomous resident AUV system concept has been jointly submitted for U.S. government development and demonstration project funding consideration.
19, 11, 9 pls cappy. Ty and g/l to all.
I'll leave that up to the boyz and girlz running the show here but if that was to happen I'll be more than happy to up my average.
I see in after hours trading it appears the shorts attacked again like the last several days to make this look worse than it closed in normal trading hours. Might be a surprise coming for them one day.
As the Zen Master says, we'll see.
Best to all.
$OPTT great article about their tech. In addition they developed
SUBSEA BATTERY
The Ocean Power Technologies Subsea Battery solution is an economical and reliable way to power subsea payloads.
Energy is stored in high capacity, zero-maintenance, and environmentally friendly (no heavy metals) lithium-iron phosphate (LiFeP04) batteries. The solidly constructed all-steel pressure vessel is designed to ASME standards for a 10-year life and is rated for up to 500 meters maximum water depth.
The Subsea Battery solution features 132 kWh total nominal capacity with up to 15 kW peak power delivery.
LiFeP04 batteries have extremely low self-discharge rates while in standby mode, storage or transport, as compared to other chemistries. ?OPT’s proprietary, highly efficient control and battery management systems further maximizes the amount of energy available for payloads, allowing the battery to remain in an active state longer than conventional battery designs.
Under normal operating conditions the Subsea Battery solution supports thousands of charge/discharge cycles. Designed to integrate with OPT’s PB3 PowerBuoy® and hybrid PowerBuoy® products, the Subsea Battery solution can also be utilized as a standalone power source or can be configured for recharge by other sources.
Some of the importance of the products offered by OPT is the elimination of carbon emissions that supporting surface vehicles produce. Additionally there is money saved, no safety concerns for a crew by not having a ship and crew floating in support of
operations.
Best to all.
$OPTT, do I ever agree with you that folks should do their own DD. For example, OPT PB3 POWERBUOY®
OPT’s PB3 can act as an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) which constantly recharges itself by harvesting energy from the waves. It is ocean-deployed, moored and floats over the point of use and can operate in any ocean depth over 20 meters and up to 3,000 meters (3 km).
The PB3 supplies power continuously to on-board payloads or equipment located on the seabed while also providing real time data transfer and communication to remote shore facilities. The PB3 is sized and designed to store sufficient electric energy to provide reliable “ride through” power in extended periods of flat-calm seas.
The conversion of wave energy into electric power is carried out through a direct drive generator that continuously charges an on-board battery pack (Energy Storage System). Power from the battery is delivered to meet application and end-user needs. This is particularly advantageous for applications that have varying power requirements including continuous and larger occasional peaks.
OPT has designed the PB3 to minimize operational costs (OPEX) whereby deployment and recovery thereof is simplified, leveraging vessels widely employed in offshore marine operations. The PB3 can be either towed to site or deployed from a vessel’s deck.
Maintenance intervals, by design, are every 3 years. The PB3 control and management system includes self-monitoring data collection, processing and transmittal to allow pro-active maintenance strategies, thus increasing availability and operational effectiveness.
OPT doesn't compete with Solar, wind or hydro because it's not designed to other than in the SCIENCE & RESEARCH field where it far exceeds the capabilities of solar and hydro which are listed below. It's markets are,
OIL & GAS
Offshore oil and gas exploration has seen a tremendous growth in the recent years. Maritime energy exploration activities have seen a considerable growth in the last two decades with offshore operations migrating farther away from the shorelines into deeper waters. While offshore oil and gas wells have shown to offer abundant energy supply, severe challenges have risen associated with the remote and isolated nature of the exploration locations. One such challenge is the supply of electrical power to support exploration activities in oil and gas platforms. Conventional methods using diesel generator sets have proven severely insufficient due to reliability, maintenance and refueling costs. Other approaches leveraging umbilical power cables from the shore are cost prohibitive ranging from $1M to several $M per km.
OPT’s renewable ocean-wave based electric power generation technology will offer the Oil & Gas (O&G) market potential new solutions that could drive down project Operational Costs (OPEX) & Capital Costs (CAPEX) helping to make current fields that offer low commercial returns more attractive for development.
*COMMUNICATIONS
Communications is a vital part of daily life for people and businesses around the world. In today’s competitive economy, fast and reliable communication is a necessary part of a businesses’ survival. While communication infrastructure is widely available on land, options to communicate offshore and over large bodies of water are far less plentiful and the cost to use them increases the further away you are from the coast. Today, our vast oceans and seas, which cover 70% of the Earth’s surface, do not have communication networks. The current networks can be extended or new networks can be installed; however, the effort required can be very expensive, bandwidth limited, and time consuming due to lack of existing infrastructure.
The PowerBuoy® provides a reliable and sustainable source of remote power, while at the same time providing a stable communications platform to enable expansion of existing networks, or development of new networks. The PowerBuoy® can generate the remote power that is required to operate the receivers and transmission equipment which make up the communications networks. The PowerBuoy® also provides a robust platform to mount communications equipment where there is no existing infrastructure. The PowerBuoy® solution will allow end users to expand their operational range, both during commercial and recreational activities, while simultaneously increasing revenue for telecommunications service providers.
*DEFENSE & SECURITY
Maritime surveillance, domain awareness, and shoreline border security represent a daunting challenge considering the vast areas to be monitored, weather related access limitations and the considerable amount of manpower required. Yet, the importance of eliminating illegal activities such as human trafficking, narcotics, and illegal border crossings is ever increasing due to the severe and negative consequences such issues inflict on impacted countries’ economies, security and overall national wellbeing. Hence, technologies and solutions that would reduce manpower needs, increase unattended surveillance sensors (radars, sonars, and such) and monitoring technology deployment and sustained in-ocean operation, all while providing real time communication, processing and data transmission capabilities, are critical.
*SCIENCE & RESEARCH
Efforts are underway to map the oceans for increased understanding of climate change, ecosystem health, available fish stocks, energy resources, and weather patterns. To achieve this increased understanding, additional sensors are being added to existing buoys and monitoring systems, and new purpose built buoys are being deployed.
Current approaches rely heavily on small diesel generator sets, batteries, solar panels and small micro-wind turbine generators to provide required power. Considering the cost associated with refueling and maintaining generator sets in remote ocean locations and the limited access due to weather conditions, the diesel generator set approach does not address the persistence, reliability and cost effectiveness needs of these activities.
Additionally, while solar panels are attractive when it comes to reducing/eliminating the need for costly refueling operations in principle, their low energy density and the severe effects of exposure to ocean corrosion, combined with limited solar exposure in the northern latitudes eliminate them as a main stream reliable power solution. Similarly, micro-wind turbines suffer from reliability and availability limitations in the harsh ocean environment. Hence, the performance of existing solutions relies mainly on the life of the batteries, and therefore the amount of power available and its duration are seriously limited.
Reliable and persistent power, often in higher amounts than are typically found on the current class of buoys and incumbent solutions, is a crucial need to enable meaningful and cost effective operational duration. In addition, the ability to consolidate and integrate new sensor systems with additional capabilities onto existing buoy platforms has the potential to reduce capital and operating & maintenance costs of these initiatives. Another benefit of increased and persistent power is the ability to address and mitigate issues such as bio-fouling which represent a major hindrance on proper sensor data operation and further extends the system’s useful life.
PB3 – An Autonomous Solution for Persistent Power
The PB3 is specifically targeted to the ocean observing market needs, and delivers a continuous reliable power of 350 Watts for instruments, data analysis, telecommunication, and data transmission to shore. The stability of OPT’s spar and float design minimizing pitch and roll provides an exceptional platform for mounting directionally sensitive sensors or transmitters. As demonstrated in prior ocean tests, the buoy maintained a relatively vertical orientation of 10 – 15 degrees off vertical during storm waves.
Currently, the PB3 design is being iterated upon from a prior generation buoy which was designed to provide 250 to 350 Watts in a moderate wave climate with 99% availability and demonstrated survival in waves up to 50 feet in height during storm conditions. The final PB3 product will have the ability to address all the shortcomings of the existing ocean observing solutions.
In addition to supplying greater amounts of power continuously and persistently, the PowerBuoy® can:
Enable the integration of larger payloads encompassing more sensors
Enable denser real time data to be collected
Process and transmit to any shore station of interest
Reduce operational and life-cycle costs
Yes everyone please do your own DD. Best to all.
