Product Sales and Trading Update
Acta S.p.A (AIM: ACTA), the hydrogen energy company, announces new product sales for its Acta Power systems and electrolysers and provides an update on trading for the year to date.
Thailand: Renewable Power Storage
Acta has received an order for two Acta Power systems for a renewable power storage application in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The systems, which have a combined power output of 4kW, are to be installed at a low-carbon residential and tourist development project where they will provide a secure and grid-independent source of power based on renewable energy storage. The installation will ensure a continuous power supply to local buildings and security systems, despite frequent periods of grid black-out.
The project developers are seeking to promote the development as a template for future zero-carbon building developments, particularly for villas and resorts for the local eco-tourism sector and ex-patriot community. Having demonstrated the Acta Power system's ability to provide reliable secondary power from a clean source, it is envisaged that this development will also lead to greater opportunities for Acta in the area.
Germany: Heliocentris
Heliocentris, the renewable energy solutions supplier to the education sector, has placed an order for ten of Acta's 500L/hr electrolyser stacks. This order follows numerous previous orders received from Heliocentris since 2012.
Commercial Update
Telecommunications
Since summer 2013, the Company has been selling Acta Power systems and electrolysers for commercial trials with mobile phone operators. These systems have been purchased and installed onsite in demanding locations across the globe and have all performed with success under real-world operating conditions. Individual trial results are as follows:
Egypt
In October 2013 a 4kW Acta Power system was installed for live site evaluation at a major mobile phone operator's base station. The system was initially installed as a second-line back-up power system but, having successfully satisfied the customer beyond specification in terms of functionality and performance, its role has been upgraded to become a first-line back-up power system. Acta is in negotiations to supply a larger number of systems in the region and hopes to conclude these negotiations shortly.
Australia
Acta has successfully concluded the live site evaluation of an Acta Power system undertaken by one of Australia's largest mobile phone operators on a telecom base station located near Melbourne and this is expected to be extended to a larger scale in the second half of this year.
Acta's Australian distributor is also in negotiations regarding numerous opportunities to install the Acta Power system for back-up power and renewable energy storage applications within Australia and the Pacific region.
Philippines
Two of the Philippines's largest mobile phone operators have each purchased an Acta Power system for live site evaluation.
The first evaluation was successfully concluded earlier this year and Acta is now in negotiations, expected to conclude later this year, for the supply of a larger number of units for further evaluation. The second evaluation is currently underway and is performing well and according to specification.
Taiwan
Acta's electrolyser has been adopted by M-Field Energy Ltd ("M-Field"), a telecom back-up power fuel cell system integrator, as a core component of M-Field's own back-up power system which has seen significant early success.
M-Field ordered six electrolysers from Acta in October 2013 and a further 15 systems in May 2014 plus a number of smaller units. Acta expects further orders from M-Field during Autumn 2014.
Renewable Energy Storage
Acta has sold its electrolysers and Acta Power units into a number of renewable energy trial projects, including a wind turbine project in Cheshire, UK, a remote renewable energy storage project in Singapore and, as stated above, a residential and tourist development project in Thailand. The systems have performed well in these trials and results will be disclosed in due course when evaluations are concluded.
Electric Fuel Cell Vehicles Refuelling
The Company continues to pursue hydrogen fuelling applications including the 3,000 fuel cell scooter project being implemented by the Company's partner APFCT in Taiwan, for which a new 1 m3/hr electrolyser was shipped in May 2014. The Company expects to announce new opportunities in fuel cell car refuelling during the second half of 2014.
Partnerships
The Company's partnership with Heliocentris continues to progress well, as highlighted by the recent order stated above. In addition, Acta's strategic US partner, ReliOn Inc has reiterated its commitment to the telecom back-up power market and to the role of Acta's products within its strategy. This follows a temporary delay in strategic progress when in April 2014 ReliOn Inc was acquired by Plug Power Inc, the leader in fuel cell systems integration for the forklift truck and materials handling market. Acta and ReliOn are exploring numerous opportunities to develop Acta's onsite hydrogen applications within the back-up power markets worldwide.
Outlook
The Board remains confident that the Company will deliver strong revenue growth for the year with sales across all of Acta's business lines gaining momentum and a growing pipeline of opportunities. However, commercial experience gathered over the last six months has highlighted that the duration of sales cycles in the telecoms sector is longer and more difficult to determine than had previously been estimated. The Board is therefore adopting a more cautious stance with regard the rate of this revenue growth for the remainder of 2014, and believes that, due to the risk of delay in converting proposals and opportunities into orders, the revenue performance for the year may be below current market expectations.
The Board notes that such delays are frequently encountered during the adoption of a new technology and remains firmly convinced that the excellent results of the evaluations undertaken to date validate the inherent value and commercial potential of Acta's unique technology for onsite hydrogen generation.
Paolo Bert, CEO of Acta, commented: "Acta is making strong progress across each of its lines of business through the sales of its Acta Power and electrolyser systems and through the successful performance demonstrated by these systems in live evaluations in demanding environments. Despite the difficulty in determining the length of sales cycles our increasing traction with clients and the growing pipeline of opportunities that we are currently experiencing demonstrates a clear demand for our solutions. We are therefore confident of increasing volume orders and strong revenue growth during this year and beyond as product adoption continues to gather pace."

On January 19, 2014, a delegation of Plug Power, including its president Andy Marsh and his colleagues came to Beijing for a visit to Azure. During the meeting, both Plug Power and Azure exchanged ideas, the recent development status of industries and the working plans of the years ahead. Both parties expressed the intention to expand co-operation to gain mutual benefits in the hydrogen-based economy of China.
BALLARD POWER (BLDP) has news about China this morning. Why do I mention this on PLUG board? I went to the Chinese company they referenced, which is "Beijing Azure Hydrogen Energy Science & Tech. Corp." Link is here: RUGAO, CHINA , June 19, 2014

Kroger Sustainability Program Finds Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology Is Robust, Reliable, Safe
June 13, 2014 04:34 by author Plug Power Marketing
When Kip Selby, Senior Project Manager for Kroger in Louisville, KY, was asked recently to speak about the company’s sustainability program, he opted to discuss their testing and adoption of hydrogen fuel cells to power the material handing fleets in several distribution warehouses.
Kip emphasized Kroger’s satisfaction with the initial deployments of Plug Power’s sustainable, efficiency-improving fuel cell solutions. He also talked about Kroger’s subsequent plans to further reduce operating costs and shrink their carbon footprint, by bringing GenDrive to even more distribution centers going forward.
Delaware, OH, Pilot Site
It all started back in 2010, when Kroger conducted a six-month pilot program in Delaware, Ohio (near Columbus), where Plug Power GenDrive units were installed in six pallet jacks and one lift truck. A mobile hydrogen plant and a single fuel dispenser were provided for re-fueling purposes.
The fuel cell-powered vehicles were tested in all temperature zones – since they are driven both outside where daytime temperatures can be very hot, and inside where cold-storage temperatures can be extremely chilly.
The Delaware pilot test results were highly successful – Kroger found that Plug Power’s GenDrive hydrogen fuel cell technology proved to be robust, reliable, and safe.
Compton, CA Deployment
Kroger responded to these results by ordering a full-scale implementation at its Compton, CA distribution center, which supplies groceries for Ralphs markets. A total of 174 GenDrive units replaced the lead-acid batteries in class 1, 2, and 3 lift and reach trucks, and three hydrogen fill stations were installed within the facility for re-fueling.
Achievements: Great ROI, Operating Efficiency, Sustainability
Despite a demanding environment that required new procedures and the need for adjustments related to maintenance software and other minor issues, the Compton site has experienced decreasing maintenance costs and a return on investment (ROI) of approximately 20% to-date.
The Compton location has also found that the fuel cells run 1.5 times longer than lead-acid batteries (two times longer for class 3 vehicles) and that fuel cells allow lift trucks to operate at consistent speed and power at all times (battery droop is no longer an issue). In addition, re-fueling takes only 1-4 minutes, rather than the 10-20 minutes required to change a battery.
And since fuel cells emit only a small amount of heat and water, the forklift-generated carbon footprint (pollution) at the site is virtually eliminated, thereby meeting Kroger’s goal of achieving sustainability in its operations.
More GenDrive Fuel Cells in 2014+
Success and satisfaction with the Compton implementation have led Kroger to order GenDrive fuel cell deployments at distribution centers in Stapleton, CO and Louisville, KY for 2014. In fact, Kroger became Plug Power’s first GenKey customer, ordering GenDrive fuel cell units, GenFuel hydrogen and fueling infrastructure and GenCare support. The company is also planning to roll out the fuel cells at additional facilities in 2015 and beyond.
"qqbmed" I'm not sure if the "bus projects" you refer to had anything to do with the below article that I ran across as shown below but this is pretty recent and I like the fact that it mentions Ballard Power (BLRD) and also other company partners also involved with Plug Power (PLUG). CTE Delivers Birmingham Fuel Cell Bus
Apr 17, 2014
Birmingham – Jefferson County Transit to begin two year demonstration of hydrogen fuel cell bus
Birmingham, Alabama – April 17, 2014 – The Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) is excited to announce delivery of a new zero emission transit bus to Birmingham – Jefferson County Transit Metro Area Express (MAX) for regular daily use. Yesterday, as part of his Invest in America tour, US Secretary of Transportation Foxx rode the fuel cell bus viewing several key Birmingham transit facilities.
MAX will operate the prototype bus alongside its fleet of CNG and diesel buses for two years. This demonstration is made possible by the National Fuel Cell Bus Program (NFCBP), a Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funded initiative. Additional support was provided through an FTA research initiative managed by the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Senator Richard Shelby commented, “This program has created the first hydrogen fuel cell bus built in the Southeast, and the first to be operated in Alabama. It means more American jobs and less dependence on foreign oil, and I’m pleased to support it.”
The all-electric drive system and fuel cell power system were integrated by Embedded Power Control (EPC) on board an EVAmerica 32' transit bus. The bus features a 75kW Ballard HD6 fuel cell and state of the art Altairnano lithium-ion batteries. The fuel cell system converts on-board hydrogen to electricity to power the electric drive system, emitting only water instead of harmful pollutants. The team expects to achieve a fuel economy nearly twice that of conventional diesel buses as has been previously demonstrated by other US fuel cell buses such as those at AC Transit in Oakland, California (7.55 mi/diesel gal equivalent).
Air Liquide Industrial U.S. LP (Air Liquide) (ties with PLUG Power) designed and constructed the hydrogen fueling station located at the MAX bus maintenance facility. The hydrogen fueling system will provide a daily average of 20 kg of hydrogen dispensed at one kg per minute through an automated 350 bar system. The University of Alabama Birmingham will conduct research and data acquisition and analysis during the program. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory will evaluate the overall project alongside other fuel cell bus demonstration programs in the U.S.
CTE and the Project Team provided hands on training to more than 80 local first responders in January. Air Liquide and EPC also led MAX drivers, maintenance staff, and management in operations and safety training. The bus is beginning operations in April 2014. A ribbon cutting will be held later this year.
Erik Bigelow, Senior Project Manager at CTE notes, “This bus represents a significant technical achievement by bringing the latest hydrogen fuel cell technology, as well as the first hydrogen fueling station to Alabama. We are excited to work with MAX, UAB and the City of Birmingham to get this bus into daily service.”

CTE Successfully Completes Department of Defense Hydrogen Fuel Cell Pilot Program
.
Jun 2, 2014
A team led by the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) has successfully completed a hydrogen fuel cell pilot program at the Defense Depot San Joaquin (DDJC) in Tracy, California. The project team, consisting of Air Products, Plug Power, Proton Energy, and Papé Material Handling successfully designed, installed, operated, maintained, and decommissioned an electrolytic hydrogen generation and dispensing station and 20 fuel cell powered forklifts.
Leo Plonsky, of the sponsoring Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), stated, “I want to thank [CTE] and [their] team for a successful project at DDJC. When considering both the hydrogen production and fuel cell aspects of the demonstrations, it was the most accomplished of our four pilot sites. [The CTE] team was on time, on performance, and under cost. Maintaining operational availability over 99% while delivering a $1MM+ underrun (16%) on an R&D project is commendable.”
Of the 8,134 kg of hydrogen produced by the electrolyzer throughout the two-year demonstration, 7,322 kg were dispensed over 9,062 fueling events providing the 20 fuel cell forklifts with 38,231 hours of operation. Even more impressive, the forklifts and hydrogen station finished the project with operational availabilities of 99% and 100%, respectively.
The pilot program aimed to increase knowledge and understanding of hydrogen-powered materials handling equipment (MHE) and the associated infrastructure. Through a 24-month demonstration period running from December 2011 through November 2013, the team collected, analyzed, and reported forklift and fueling operations and maintenance data leading to TRL (Technology Readiness Level) and MRL (Manufacturing Readiness Level) advancements for the equipment. The team believes the project goal of increasing knowledge and understanding of the system was certainly met.

UPDATE on MSN Toyota launching hydrogen car by year-end
http://editorial.autos.msn.com/toyota-launching-hydrogen-car-by-year-end
Toyota will launch production of its first commercially available hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle before the end of the year, according to a report from Japan. That would appear to be months ahead of its original plans.
Toyota, which hasn't changed its stance of "2015 or sooner" for the release of the car, first revealed plans to get into the hydrogen car market last autumn, at the biennial Tokyo Motor Show.

Thx for the input "Easy Money" and "watchergrow" - IMO, this one, PHRX will bring us some good rewards in the not-to-distant future.
HELP - Question for the Board - Is there anyone else that is using SCOTTRADE been able to do a BUY trade for PHRX?
I was told last week when I tried to BUY to contact my local ST office for assistance. When I called and spoke to the representative (I've dealt with him 10 years or so now.) he told me he couldn't process a trade for PHRX. When I asked him why not, he said, "Because it's too expensive for us."
I told him that was F'ed up and who the hell makes such a decision?
How could that be any more of a cost to them than any other security? They still get their base $7 commission in addition to their customary .005% of the principal amount. How's that any more a losing cost?
I don't understand that. This is a first for me. Thank you.

download image RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.—Bradley A. Peganoff has joined RTI as vice president of government and corporate relations.
In his new role, Peganoff will lead efforts to build and strengthen RTI's relationships among state and federal agency officials and policy makers as well as others in the commercial, educational and nonprofit sectors.
Peganoff will report to Jennie Hunter-Cevera, executive vice president of Discovery and Analytical Sciences (DAS), Corporate Development and Government Relations. He will work with longtime RTI staff member Reid Maness, who was recently promoted to director of government relations. Maness coordinates RTI's Department of Energy government relations efforts as well as relations with North Carolina and other states.
Peganoff joins RTI from the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) in Baltimore, where he was director of government and corporate affairs. He was responsible for planning and executing an annual government affairs strategy focused on generating revenue, raising policy makers' awareness of that institution, and cultivating both academic and industry collaborations.
"I am pleased to add Brad's talents to our team here at RTI," Hunter-Cevera said. "His scientific background as well as his knowledge and experience in the government and commercial market space will strengthen our relations and create new research and business opportunities."
As in his new position at RTI, Peganoff's work for UMBI included state as well as federal liaison activities. As an example of one of his achievements that bridged both levels of government, he established university-based federal partnerships with North Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi and Delaware, providing funding for a Blue Crab Advanced Research Consortium.
Peganoff also worked on numerous policy positioning papers to enhance and benefit the biotechnology industry in general, testified on key legislation affecting biotechnology, and was a founding organizer of Maryland's biotechnology caucus.
Before joining UMBI, Peganoff worked in the Maryland state legislature, helping to draft legislation on health care and biotechnology. He has also been a manager for the Orthofix company, a medical equipment maker; an account representative for Johnson & Johnson/Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals, where one of his roles was handling direct-to-government strategy; and a cardiovascular representative for Merck Pharmaceuticals.
Peganoff was named a distinguished alumnus of Johns Hopkins University. He has received numerous State of Maryland legislative citations, and won several awards from Johnson & Johnson for his sales and marketing accomplishments with that company.
He has a master's degree in biotechnology from Johns Hopkins, where his study emphasis was in biotechnology enterprise and federal regulatory affairs. He has a bachelor's in biology from Gannon University.
In the coming weeks, Peganoff will be working with units across RTI to develop a government relations strategy and implementation plan.
