Where the Lights May Go Out This Summer
An electric association forecasts a decent outlook, but with trouble spots
By Alex Kingsbury
Posted May 14, 2008
The outlook for the country's electrical grid this summer is generally positive, though weaker points in the country's infrastructure do exist in places like Southern California and drought-affected areas of the Southeast. Those two spots are getting extra attention from grid watchers, according to an annual assessment announced today by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, the power industry's self-regulatory body.
"This drought really caused some concerns about plant operability, as water levels threatened to drop below plant cooling and water intakes," says Mark Lauby, manager of reliability assessments for NERC. "Conditions for 2008, though, are improving, but we'll continue to monitor the situation."
Southern California remains a source of concern, despite improvements in infrastructure. "Significant amounts of imported power are required to fortify capacity margins and preserve reliability, resulting in heavily loaded transmission lines in the area during peak conditions," Lauby says. As a result, the report found "major unplanned transmission or generation outages or extreme temperatures or demand might lead to resource constraints."
As usual, weather is the great unknown—hot spells when consumers turn up their air conditioners and when reservoirs near power plants fall. There is also the ever-present threat of hurricanes.
Last year, NERC forecast possible supply trouble spots in Connecticut and Southern California, but it was windstorms in St. Louis that caused the most difficulty. More than 50,000 people lost power there in May. Nationwide, the unseasonably hot summer weather in 2007 drove overall peak usage 2 percent higher than the organization had predicted. The projected summer peak for 2008 is 1.3 percent higher than the actual summer peak from last year.
Fuel supplies are also being watched closely. At the beginning of this year, coal inventories at power stations were nearly at five-year highs, with more than 51 days of reserve. But eastern U.S. coal markets have been disrupted by events in the world markets, which has driven up prices to record levels. Exports of eastern American coal, for instance, are expected to jump 20 million to 30 million tons over 2007 levels. In the first two months of the year, reserves fell to 48 days.
Tightening coal supplies are a source of concern for power generation, especially if plants failed to lock in purchases of their coal supplies early when prices were low. Outages are not expected as a result, the report found, but the situation does deserve close monitoring.
And while peak capacity varies greatly depending on the region of the country (from 8.7 to 27.8 percent), wind power is also now an important source of generation. "We are starting to see an increase in wind resources impacting capacity," NERC reported.

TYNGSBORO, Mass., May 09, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) ----Beacon Power Corporation (NASDAQ: BCON), a company that designs and develops advanced products and services to support more stable, reliable and efficient electricity grid operation, announced its financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2008.
For the first quarter of 2008, Beacon Power reported revenue of $20,000 and a net loss of $5,287,000, or ($0.06) per share, compared to revenue of $393,000 and a net loss of $3,090,000, or ($0.05) per share, in the first quarter of 2007. The decrease in revenue is the result of completion of development contracts with both California and New York as well as the Department of Energy in 2007. Beacon Power is now entering the production phase and expects to have commercial revenues from its frequency regulation facilities in the fourth quarter of 2008.
During the first quarter of 2008, Beacon Power incurred costs of $3,032,000 for research and development expense, compared to $1,660,000 in the first quarter of 2007, an increase of $1,372,000 or 83%. Research and development expense increased primarily due to the expensing of development costs that had been allocated to government contracts in the prior year, increased headcount-related costs, development and design costs for our frequency regulation facilities, and increased expenses for legal and professional services. Selling, general and administrative expense was $2,176,000 during the first quarter of 2008, compared to $1,414,000 in the first quarter of 2007, an increase of $762,000, or approximately 54%. This increase is due primarily to increased headcount-related costs as well as increased external fees related to consulting, legal, marketing and other services to facilitate penetration into the frequency regulation markets. Additionally, depreciation expense increased by $254,000 compared to the first quarter of 2007. This increase is primarily related to our new facility in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts.
At March 31, 2008, the Company had $25.0 million in cash and cash equivalents, with working capital of $23.1 million. In the fourth quarter of 2008, the Company anticipates receiving revenue from its first commercial frequency regulation facility, which will likely be in New York, as well as from a second plant either in New England (at its Tyngsboro site) or the PJM Interconnection. The Company has an option to purchase approximately seven acres of land in Stephentown, NY, and is awaiting the expected approval of a land-use permit it has applied for from that town, as well the approval of an active interconnection request by NYISO. As referenced above, Beacon has initiated the process of establishing up to five megawatts of frequency regulation capacity on its Tyngsboro site, and two more potential locations are being actively pursued in the PJM region.
looks like WMIN did the selling no longer has 100k for sale,NITE is top axe for now.no mm on bid.
i'm not going to get excited. mms do this sometimes too agitate sales hoping to bring in new customers.
may have nothing to do with company.
i have.truth is its a little clunky. i've never been able to use the charts,L2 you need live feed back up because the third or fourth decimal from the right is often wrong.[it will sometimes say .00290 when the correct number is .0020]for some reason it took me almost 10 working days to get up and running after payment, maybe my fault i'm dumb with computers but there's lots like me.i dont know about customer service because after getting it up and working i have had no problems.i am satisfied with the product and especially the price.

i am old also with a third grade education and have been told many times that i am as dumb as a stump.but i have seen and think i am responding to a over educated idiot .anyone that says 90 % of americans are stupid is simply saying that they believe others are not as smart as themselves. which in no way means they are right about anything, just that they have an over inflated sense of self importance.
what that has to do with bushes treason or clinton's thievery i must have missed.
you sound like some one who has never worked so hard so as to be dog tired and be able to do little more than eat, sleep and watch some thing numb and dumb on tv.not kicking the dog or cursing your kids is a spectacular accomplishment.
to call 90 % of voters lazy is eletist and ignorant. they vote against their own economic interest because they are naive enough to believe that that others are like themselves. a crook always sees others as crooks and an honest man sees honesty. those that only see lazy and dumb are also what they see.
although you are a good chartist you seem shallow and simple minded.
be alright with me.i usually take three bites of this. already got one at $1.25
odd, ETRD is still on bid,
SALI is buying.
nextwiz i remember, o how i remember.
but seriously, i have a buy in at $1.25.
although i was hoping that we wouldn't fall below $1.30
agree the base/charts looks strong here
good luck
yep all them longs giggling, nudging each other.
smirking smart alecs.
dang i wish i had held.
we have ETRD on bid. 1 X 6

then they are gone.
thanks Sheff was wondering wtf was going on.
was thinking they had a quadrillion to sell
where ever the ask goes
there be SBSH

According to Bill Capp, president and CEO of Beacon Power, “The potential for large-scale wind-related energy storage applications is quite significant. Beacon is pleased to be part of an R&D project whose goals include showing how our flywheel energy storage can be applied and controlled to increase transmission capacity and maximize the value of wind generation resources in California.” Capp added, “The Tehachapi project is consistent with Beacon’s interest in exploring and commercializing additional grid applications that have high cyclic requirements, move a great deal of energy through our flywheel systems, address a large and growing global market, and facilitate the deployment of renewable energy.”
As a key subcontractor on the project, Beacon Power will work with the prime contractor, Alternative Energy Systems Consulting, and be responsible for implementing the energy storage portion of a system that:
Utilizes flywheel technology to improve the dynamic control of wind generation resources;
Coordinates energy production and delivery from wind generation in the Tehachapi region, and;
Demonstrates that such a system could expand the potential delivery of renewable energy and increase the capacity and use of transmission facilities in California.
The flywheel system used for the project will be the reconditioned scale-power Smart Energy Matrix that Beacon provided to the California Energy Commission in 2005-2007 to successfully demonstrate frequency regulation performance.
once again i sit here watching as the parade leaves without me..
thought all that volume meant something..
Beacon Power to Provide Flywheel System to Support Wind Power Integration Project in California
Energy storage system will be paired with intelligent software agents to increase transmission line capacity and facilitate growth of wind power
TYNGSBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Beacon Power Corporation (NASDAQ: BCON), a company that designs and develops advanced products and services to support more stable, reliable and efficient electricity grid operation, announced today that it has been awarded a subcontract to provide a flywheel energy storage system in support of a wind integration R&D project sponsored by the California Energy Commission. Beacon will receive approximately $250,000 to offset R&D expenses and will contribute an additional $90,000 of engineering resources for the project, bringing the R&D total to approximately $340,000.
In addition to the California Energy Commission, which is funding the project, other leading stakeholders include Southern California Edison and the California Independent System Operator (ISO). The flywheel system will be installed in Tehachapi, California, a high-potential wind resource area where, according to a report from the California ISO, up to 4,200 megawatts (MW) of wind power may be added in the coming years.
i completely agree with "this a real co" and well worth the wait.
shares are are a bargain down here and am glad to see some being able to sell.
just haven't heard from beandog in a while.
