Review: Battery key to Mobile ESPN use By BRUCE MEYERSON, AP Technology Writer
8 minutes ago
NEW YORK - A word of advice if you're fan enough to get the new Mobile ESPN cell phone: Spring for the extended-life battery. If you do, cellular sports nirvana may be within reach. If you don't, you may not even be able to make a call.
The "ACE" phone — a souped-up version of a RAZR-like flip from Samsung — is a big step for Mobile ESPN, as it's only the second handset in an ambitious bid to siphon sportsaholics from mainstream wireless brands.
The differences between the ACE and its predecessor, the Sanyo MVP, are more superficial than technological. But looks are a key feature for a pricier service that tries hard to replicate the hyperactive glitz of ESPN's television broadcast — with real-time scores, stats and video — within the confines of a handheld device.
The slender Samsung is eye-catching and more tightly integrated with ESPN's content and branding, better concealing the fact that this is largely another company's cellular service (Sprint) in disguise. The Sanyo looks and feels a tad clunkier, and unlike the ACE, its buttons aren't optimized for one-click access to the neon carnival of Mobile ESPN's menus. On the downside, the ACE gets sluggish or even frozen on downloads and updates, while the MVP zips along.
While both handsets are high end in terms of processing power and display technologies, the Samsung viewing experience is more pleasing for the video updates that Mobile ESPN hopes users will pay extra to watch. ESPN, a unit of Walt Disney Co., asked Samsung Electronics Co. to boost the graphics-rendering speed of its A900 handset sold by Sprint Nextel Corp. to make the ACE faster.
But better visuals come with a battery-devouring cost on such a skinny phone. Even with light usage of the Mobile ESPN application, the Samsung phone would drain its juice in less than half a day. In an apparent nod to this deficiency, every ACE is being sold with a free car charger, an accessory that usually costs extra.
The real answer, though, is to buy an extended-life battery for $30 on top of the ACE's price tag: $99 for new subscribers signing a two-year commitment, or $149 with a two-year extension to upgrade from the MVP.
The bigger battery makes the phone a bit fatter of course, but the extra eighth of an inch doesn't produce much of a backside bulge on a handset that's just five-eighths of an inch thick to start. (The phone weighs 3.9 ounces with the standard battery and almost an ounce more with the larger one.)
As for the service itself, Mobile ESPN is a work in progress, but delivers gobs and gobs of timely content that would make many a sports fanatic salivate. Whether they'd pay extra for it remains to be seen.
It's been some time since I've been an avid sports fan, though I do faithfully "manage" a long-suffering team in a fantasy baseball league. As a father with little time to sit around and watch games, I'm probably not the target audience for a premium product like Mobile ESPN.
But truth be told, since my fantasy baseball team is in contention, it was fun carrying around a phone that could provide an array of quick information when I wasn't near a TV or computer. When Ty Wigginton, a third baseman on my team who moonlights as a member of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, was placed on the disabled list, I found out at the beach with an alert from the cell.
The $10 fee for wireless Internet use on the phone gets you most of Mobile ESPN's non-video features, as well as a typical cellular connection to Web sites that haven't been optimized for a mobile phone. For an extra $15 a month, you can get video clips and game highlights from ESPN's TV broadcast, plus a monthly allowance of 200 text messages. Calling plans start at $40 a month for 400 anytime minutes and $60 for 800, with unlimited nights and weekends for both.
The basic options, all accessible with precious few clicks compared to the typical wireless Internet menu, include news alerts and real-time scoring updates on up to five teams of your choosing.
There are also play-by-play snapshots from ESPN.com's signature GameCast and audio updates from ESPN Radio. You can plug in a list of favorite players so it takes fewer clicks to see how they fared that day.
As compared with the rigid approach to news delivery on most cell phones, which shoehorn articles into generic categories like "financial" or "baseball," the menus on Mobile ESPN's phone are a splendid demonstration of how to serve up content on a tiny screen.
The main menu, rather than occupying an entire screen, is an ever-present ribbon of icons to the left that can rotate up or down in a continuous loop, ready to steer you directly to any other selection instead of forcing you to navigate back to the main page first. And the menu choices aren't fixed in stone: dedicated icons appear with the arrival of events such as the World Cup, the British Open and even the World Series of Poker.
There were annoyances too. Occasionally, the network connection would fail, requiring several attempts to connect. Video downloads could take a half a minute or more than two. And true to Murphy's Law, the network went down during the final game of the World Cup.
Mobile ESPN won't say how many subscribers it has. Some wireless and marketing experts doubt there's much of an audience for premium services like this.
It's a tough call. I might not pay extra for it, but I do know people who are ga-ga enough about sports that they'd love to eliminate those lonely moments when they're not near a TV or listening to sports radio.
Just remember: There was a time, before cell phones hit the mainstream, when people jammed coins into pay phones to call sports-information lines or carried beepers with running scores. And none of those services came with video.

Couple of things - Posted this story a few days ago but I see it is back today on the Yahoo news web site. I still think it is a bit of a dot connector ! After all our qode window and yahoo go are up and running. Does this mean qode will come pre loaded on Motorola phones ?? !!
Yahoo Goes Mobile With Motorola Jay Wrolstad, mobiletechtoday.com
Mon Jul 24, 12:23 PM ET
Yahoo is extending its reach into the mobile realm by inking an agreement with wireless technology specialist Motorola that will put a variety of services, including Web search, e-mail, and personal contact lists at the fingertips of phone users.
Under terms of the multi-year deal the Yahoo Go for Mobile software package will be preloaded on millions of Motorola handhelds, starting early next year, giving anytime access to the Internet portal's most popular communications services.
In Synch
"We feel this gives mobile users the best Web experience on mobile devices, delivering the services people use on the desktop to their phones," company spokesperson Nicole Leverich said. She cited the ability to synchronize phone and PC-based Yahoo address books as a particular advantage of Yahoo Go, which also includes Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Search and Yahoo! Local in a single application.
Motorola and Yahoo first hooked up a year ago, with Motorola initially loading a version of Yahoo Mail on some of its phones. Yahoo also has similar deals with Nokia and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion. According to Leverich, the company is working with wireless carriers worldwide as well to push the Yahoo Go platform.
"Our goal is to make it easier for phone users to access and consume data by customizing services for those types of devices, which have smaller screens and provide a different type of Web experience" she said. Putting Yahoo go directly into phones means users can easily get up and running with familiar services, Leverich added.
Laying the Groundwork
IDC analyst Sean Ryan noted that Google, Yahoo, AOL and others are pushing into the mobile space to provide yet another entry to their Web sites. "Sales of mobile phones are far above that for PCs, but the mobile industry is just beginning to create a Web surfing experience similar to that of desktop machines and goes beyond text-based content" he said.
So, while it may take some time before the number of Web-enabled handhelds reaches critical mass, Yahoo, Google and others are laying the groundwork by establishing ties with device makers and carriers, Ryan said."

NFL Mobile users can create customizable text message alerts to ensure delivery of the kind of information they want, when they want it. Alerts will be sent at selected times such as when a player or team scores, when specific teams enter the red zone, at the end of each quarter or game, or as official NFL injury reports are issued. Sprint subscribers must opt-in to receive the text alerts, and standard text messaging charges apply.
NFL Mobile users will also receive game video and audio highlights. Only NFL Mobile delivers wireless video highlights of NFL games, which will be available at the conclusion of every game (excluding video for games played on Monday nights). Audio highlights will be available for both the home and road teams' radio broadcasts during every game of the season with highlights posted at the end of each quarter and shortly after the conclusion of each game.

- Gamecenter - A real-time graphical representation of the most current drive for each game including each play of the drive, the quarter and time remaining in the quarter, current score, down and distance, score board by quarter, and last-play description. Gamecenter will also provide a written narrative of the play-by-play for each sequential drive, starting from the current drive back to the first drive of the game.
- Team/Player Statistics - Sorted and presented by team, category and player (in that order), statistical categories will include all relative information including passing, receiving, rushing, two-point conversions, kicking, punting, kickoff returns, fumbles, interceptions, sacks and blocked kicks.
- Drive Charts - Graphic summaries for each drive of each game, including time of possession, yards gained, number of plays and result of each drive.
- Scores - Real-time scores for all games will be displayed on a single scoreboard in the following order: live games, completed games, upcoming games. Features include when a team is about to score ("Red-Zone Alert"), when a team scores, which team has possession of the ball, and direct links to a respective game's live play-by-play.
- NFL Video On-Demand - Video segments from popular NFL Network-produced pieces such as Super Bowl highlights, greatest players and rivalries, sounds of the game, and interviews and features of current former coaches and players.
- NFL Network - Sprint will continue to offer live, round-the-clock audio/video streaming of NFL Network's broadcast as well as a multitude of on-demand programming such as Total Access, Game of the Week and Player/Coach Interviews. Additionally, NFL Mobile users will have easy access to the following content: NFL.com Fantasy Companion, ring tones, graphics, photos and logos, and the ability to personalize their service with their favorite team colors. Some of this content may be offered for a fee. NFL Mobile from Sprint can be downloaded by texting NFL to 7777 or via the Vision or Power Vision home deck.

Motorola to install Yahoo Internet link on mobile phones
SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Motorola will pre-install Yahoo's Internet search facility, e-mail and address book on its new mobile telephones from the first half of next year, the companies announced.
The multi-year deal would make 'Yahoo Go for Mobile' a standard feature on tens of millions of handheld devices Motorola markets in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, according to the companies.
"Together, Yahoo and Motorola are making it easier than ever before for consumers to seamlessly access their favorite web services, information and content across both their personal computer and mobile phone," Yahoo senior vice president of Connected Life, Marco Boerries, said in a statement.
Illinois-based Motorola is the world's second largest mobile telephone maker. Motorola and Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo forged an alliance last year to bring Internet services to handheld devices.

Snap uses visual recognition technology similar to that used in the anti-terrorist services for facial recognition. It works like this; see something you like, in the flesh or on TV, as a print ad or on the side of a bus. Take a picture of it with your camera phone and send us the photograph as a Multi Media Message (MMS). We’ll match your photograph to our database and send you an offer relating to whatever it is.
It doesn’t matter if your photo isn’t perfect, or only includes a part of the image. Our technology is good enough to recognise it. What’s more, we can recognise multiple product images from a single photograph, so you could even send us a picture of the contents of your fridge and get offers on things you regularly buy.
SNAP is just one of many ideas we’re working on to ensure that our future is as bright as our present. We look forward to sharing more with you, as we invent it.

Nokia to expand phone coverage in China Thu Jul 6, 12:31 PM ET
HELSINKI, Finland - Nokia Corp. announced a $150 million deal Thursday to expand mobile phone coverage in Central China's Henan province.
Work under the contract with China Mobile subsidiary Henan Mobile Communication Co. Ltd. will begin immediately and will be operational by the end of September, Nokia said. It's the 11th expansion of Henan's Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication network.
Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker and market leader in China and India, has increasingly turned its attention to Asia from Europe, where cell phone levels are reaching saturation point.
It estimates that by 2008 the number of global mobile phone owners will grow to 3 billion, with some 80 percent of the growth in the emerging markets of China, India, Southeast Asia and Africa.
Last year, China became Nokia's largest single market, overtaking the United States, with net sales growing 28 percent to $4 billion. In March, it announced cooperation with Baidu.com Inc., a leading Chinese-language Internet search provider, to make mobile search easier and more convenient in Chinese-speaking markets, including Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Nokia has been Henan MCC's major supplier for every GSM expansion since 1995, and is the operator's sole provider of networks using GSM or GPRS, or General Packet Radio Service, technology. Henan MCC is a wholly owned subsidiary of China Mobile Ltd.
Based in Espoo, just outside the Finnish capital, Nokia has sales in 130 countries and 59,000 employees.

Mobile firm 3 chooses Yahoo for web services Thu Jun 29, 6:55 AM ET
LONDON (Reuters) - UK-based mobile phone company 3 said on Thursday it had chosen Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news)to provide a raft of internet services for its network.
With mobile providers eager to entice users to spend more time on their mobiles, the Hutchinson Whampoa division said the offering would range from web access to e-mail and Yahoo's popular instant messaging.
"This relationship isn't just about us buying more content to put on our portal, its about a deep engagement between our two companies to bring some of the world's most popular Internet services and content to 3's networks," said Christian Salbaing, 3's European managing director.
3 did not give any detail on pricing but said the service would be launched in the UK in July first and had plans to roll it out to Italy, Ireland, Austria, Sweden, Denmark and Australia later in the year and on Hutchison Telecom International in Hong Kong and India.
Mobile operators have sunk in billions of euros to set up third generation networks and now need to increase data usage on their networks to recoup costs, with core voice revenues threatened by intense competition and falling prices.
By spending time browsing websites and checking e-mail, users spend more on higher revenue data services, making mobile operators more money.
3 said the web browsing would not be limited to selected sites, so users would be free to access the sites of Yahoo rivals such and internet giants Google and Microsoft's MSN.
In February Britain's Vodafone Group Plc, the world's biggest mobile phone operator by sales, signed a deal with Google to offer search capabilities on its Vodafone live! 3G service, while Google also has deals with T-Mobile and Japanese telecoms firm KDDI Corp..

Cingular Introduces 3G Broadband Network in Atlanta
Mobile Broadband Services Transform City Into Wireless Speedway
ATLANTA, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular said today it will transform Atlanta into a wireless speedway as it begins offering mobile broadband access throughout the greater metropolitan area.
Cingular customers can now use its 3G mobile broadband network to more quickly access e-mail, browse the Internet, connect to business applications, or watch video clips while on-the-go from Alpharetta south to Riverdale and from Powder Springs east to Lilburn.
"People want mobile access to communications and information services wherever they are, whether they are taking in a game at Turner Field, visiting a customer in Alpharetta or working from home in Stone Mountain," said Cliff Minor, vice president and general manager for Cingular's Georgia Operations. "Our 3G network complements the broadband experience customers already receive at work by extending an 'invisible wire' throughout our service area."
Cingular's 3G network is currently available in 54 communities nearby the major markets of Austin (TX), Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Gary (IN), Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland (OR), Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose (CA), Seattle, Tacoma (WA) and Washington D.C. The company will expand its 3G network coverage area to most major markets by the end of 2006.
The Cingular 3G network uses HSDPA/UMTS (High Speed Downlink Packet Access/Universal Mobile Telephone System) technology. This technology makes it possible for people to enjoy a wide variety of wireless content. HSDPA/UMTS gives Cingular the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services to customers and is based upon the global standard for wireless communications - GSM. For businesses and consumers, this means more feature- rich services and content, and for Cingular, a more economical method for carrying traffic and more efficient use of spectrum.
PERSONAL MOBILITY - FAST AND FURIOUS
Customers who want to watch video highlights of last night's Braves game, or get a preview of HBO's Entourage series, can see it all - and more - by signing up for Cingular Video. Cingular Video is an on-demand streaming video service with a large selection of popular mobile content that can be viewed on 3G-capable Cingular phones.
"We've tailored Cingular Video so that customers can quickly and easily personalize and access some of their favorite entertainment and information sites," said Minor. "Imagine a soccer mom who can now get regular weather video updates every 30 minutes from her phone on the way between her son or daughters activities."
Cingular Video includes local weather forecasts in 100 cities across the country, three times more cities than any other service provider. Basic Cingular Video service includes more options for families from media outlets including ABC TV, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, CNN, Disney Channel, Disney Mobile Studios, ESPN, FOX Sports, FOX News, FOX TV, FUEL, HBO Family (premium), HBO Mobile (premium), iFilm, Jayski Alerts, Music Choice, NASCAR.com To Go (premium), NCAA Championship Sports Content, NBC, Richard Childress Racing, SPEED, The Weather Channel and TV Guide Channel.
Cingular currently offers 3G service on the LG CU320 and Samsung SGH-ZX10 handsets and will add several other handsets to its product line, including adding support for HSDPA, in the coming months. Prices for Cingular 3G handsets start at $99 after a $50 mail-in rebate for a two-year service plan commitment. Cingular Video requires a $19.99 MEdia Net Unlimited data package. Premium content, such as HBO Mobile, is available on a an additional monthly subscription basis, while other content, such as music video clips from Music Choice, is available on a pay-per-view basis for a 24-hour period of time.
Cingular Video offers quick access to content users care about most. Cingular Video users can create a personalized home page with up to three links to their favorite video sites. In addition, the service is pre-set to automatically stream localized weather information to a user's personalized "News & Weather" page each day and provides local weather forecasts in 100 cities across the country, three times more cities than any other service provider.
While some wireless providers offer only a limited set of "non-premium" content options, Cingular Video provides the most complete basic-service package available in the U.S. market. Cingular Video is the only service to offer Fox News clips in addition to news broadcasts from CNN and NBC.
MOBILIZING BUSINESS AT HIGH-SPEED
Utilizing its 3G network, Cingular's LaptopConnect solutions give businesses the ability to use their laptops to access the Internet or e-mail, download large files and attachments, or run corporate business applications at average data speeds between 400-700Kbps (kilobits per second) on the downlink, with bursts to more than a megabit per second.
"Businesses need the same fast reliable access to information whether they're working from a desktop in their office or making a presentation to a customer at an offsite location," said Jeff Bradley, vice president for Cingular's Business Markets Group. "They don't want to wait for a large contract to download or access their company's intranet site to check inventory status. With BroadbandConnect, they don't have to anymore."
Cingular LaptopConnect combines either an external LaptopConnect card or an integrated modem within a Laptop and Cingular's Communication Manager to provide access to the 3G network. The service also offers additional security features compared to alternative wireless technologies.
Customers can purchase either an Option Wireless GT Max, Novatel U730 or Sierra Wireless AC860 laptop modem card for $99.99, after rebate, when they sign up for a qualifying voice plan and two-year, Unlimited Data Connect plan. Customers can also purchase a Dell Latitude D620 or Dell Latitude D820 at http://www.cingular.com/dell. Cingular's Unlimited DataConnect plan is currently $59.99 those customers who sign up for a two-year term and have a qualifying voice plan with Cingular.
Additionally, business customers traveling outside the United States can select one of two international data plans. Cingular DataConnect North America ($109.99 for 100MB) for travel within Canada and Mexico, and DataConnect Global ($139.99 for 100MB), an overseas plan - both include unlimited data usage on Cingular's domestic data networks. Cingular is the first and only carrier in the world to offer a single card/single rate plan solution for international travelers.
All Cingular LaptopConnect cards and Integrated modems are dual-band HSDPA/UMTS (850/1900Mhz) and quad-band EDGE/GPRS (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution/General Packet Radio Service) in four bands (850/900/1800/1900Mhz), which means the devices are interoperable between the company's nationwide EDGE network and it's 3G network. The Option Wireless GT Max card also includes the 2100Mhz band, offering either HSDPA or UMTS broadband speeds in select countries.
THE TECHNOLOGY: HSDPA/UMTS
HSDPA is the high-speed evolution of GSM/EDGE (Global System for Mobile Communication), which shares a common core network and therefore is backward compatible with EDGE/GPRS.
In areas where the 3G network is not available, customers will automatically receive service on the company's EDGE network. The Cingular EDGE network is available in more than 13,000 cities and towns and in areas along 40,000 miles of highways, providing average data speeds between 70- 135Kbps. GSM is the world's most popular wireless technology, which is used by more than 1.8 billion people in 210 countries. Cingular customers can make/receive voice calls in more than 190 countries and access data services in more than 100 countries.
The launch is part of the company's $165 million investment in its Georgia network this year. Over the past three years, Cingular has invested more than $560 million in its Georgia network integrating and deploying GSM/GPRS/EDGE technology, preparing for its 3G (UMTS) deployment, and improving overall coverage and capacity.

MySpace to sell search function
After initial scepticism, Mr Murdoch embraced the internet and MySpace
MySpace, the internet site that lets users build their own homepage, plans to auction off its search function to either Google, Yahoo or Microsoft.
Chief operating officer Peter Chernin unveiled the plans during a talk that was broadcast over the internet.
MySpace was bought by News Corporation for $580m (£315m) last year and Rupert Murdoch's firm has been looking at ways of earning cash from its investment.
Giving advertisers access to MySpace's young audience may be one way, it said.
'Scratching the surface'
MySpace allows anyone to build their own homepage for free, listing topics such as their favourite bands, top books, general interests, and then get in contact with other like-minded folk.
As well as the user-written text, they can also stream music and video to create networks of friends and contacts.
The company is the biggest social networking website, with more than 57 million registered users. Rivals include Facebook, Bebo, MSN Spaces, Friendster and Yahoo 360.
Analysts estimate that the company's UK audience is somewhere in the region of two and four million.
Importantly, MySpace has detailed logs of its users' preferences, online behaviour and personal information, allowing advertisers to target potential market segments.
For News Corp, it also may allow the company to redirect its users to the media content that is generated by its Fox Interactive Media entertainment division.
"We've just scratched the surface of how to monetise it," said Mr Chernin.

Yes it is a good thing but unfortunately not a new thing. MSN, Yahoo, Hotmail and ebay are all listed in the above header as 'live' and have been there since the beginning of February.
Go window still down
Lot of good questions have been raised here today, which hopefully they will be addressed at the ASM. Crusher, have you and the lurker "sky pilot" decided to make the trip south ? I will be returning from Alaska two days prior - so no can do.
Cell phones ready to start dialing for dollars By Brian Garrity
Sat Apr 15, 12:05 AM ET
NEW YORK (Billboard) - Forget about cash and credit cards. There's a new payment alternative for buying CDs, DVDs and other such entertainment pleasures -- your cell phone.
Online payment specialist PayPal, a unit of Internet auction giant eBay, has introduced PayPal Mobile to North America. The wireless version of its service enables users to buy goods and exchange money using their phones. Transactions are conducted by secure text message.
Music heavyweights Universal Music Group and MTV already are supporting the technology.
UMG will use PayPal Mobile to sell CDs by the Pussycat Dolls, Mary J. Blige and Daddy Yankee in direct-marketing initiatives. Rollout is imminent. And MTV plans to use it to sell basic merchandise from its Web store, including T-shirts and DVDs.
Other big-name media and entertainment brands, including 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Bravo and the NBA Store, hope to drive similar impulse buys by offering items for purchase via PayPal Mobile.
"With the overwhelming popularity of mobile phones, the time has never been better for the merging of e-commerce and wireless devices," PayPal president Jeff Jordan says.
To be sure, the opportunity is huge. PayPal claims more than 100 million members.
In addition to purchasing goods, PayPal members can send money to other individuals as well as to participating charities and merchants.
"PayPal Mobile is an important indicator of the broader changes now occurring in the mobile content/payments space," says Ed Kountz, senior financial services analyst with Jupiter Research.
NEW TO THE STATES
Sophisticated mobile phones can already be used to buy digital products, including music downloads, ringtones, pictures and videos. But the ability to use a phone as a digital wallet for buying physical goods is a new phenomenon in the United States.
PayPal's technology figures to be just one of a number of mobile payment applications.
Motorola is said to be targeting the market, as are startups Obopay and TextPayMe. And credit card companies, including Visa, are testing a contactless payment technology in phones called near field communication (NFC), which uses radio waves to transmit transaction data. In the NFC trials, participants use their phones to make purchases at a coffee shop, download a movie trailer in a DVD store, shop from their home TV and buy concert tickets from a smart poster.
"You're going to start to see retailers embrace (mobile) as another payment option," Universal Music Mobile vice president and general manager Rio Caraeff says.
Analysts say mobile payment technology creates new sales opportunities for the music business, including CD pre-orders, ticketing and concert merchandise.
New mobile payment services are expected to expand the number of merchants selling digital products for use on phones. In a move unrelated to PayPal Mobile, UMG in May is expected to launch a new premium short-message service that will allow consumers to use text-message codes to buy ringtones, wallpapers and videos for their phones. Billing will be handled by participating carriers including Cingular, Sprint and T-Mobile.
Analysts are divided over what the music business should expect from these new mobile payment options.
"To the extent that digital money doesn't feel like real money, it may increase spontaneous purchasing," says Aram Sinnreich, an analyst with Los Angeles-based research firm Radar Research. Sinnreich argues that "carriers have a very simple and transparent billing relationship with consumers, and adding a second billing platform only confuses things."
Kountz cautions that it will take 12 to 18 months to see how much traction services like PayPal Mobile can gain in North America. "User habits and awareness don't shift overnight."

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. There is not much I can add to what has already been said to you about the WR. We are basically in the dark about what is going on. There has been no offical 'January word auction launch' that we are aware of. But the positive side of things are that at the beginning of February, or there abouts, several what I would call major developments were found to work in the gowindow. Namely ebay, hotmail, yahoo, msn, all the major pro sports leagues etc. .
Now we can add Sony to the ever growing, albeit slowly, list of companies associated with us through the gowindow. What kind of fees have been collected are unknown as well. Questions like - are the demo sites going to automatically be'turned on' when this thing is finally launched ? Or are all these companies going to have to re register, couldn't tell you. We'll just have to wait for it to happen.
Sorry this probably doesn't help you one bit ! LOL So let me say I hope you enjoy the rest of this long weekend...
kgr
Success - yes of course it is still in the header. Don't know why for the life of me I couldn't see it last night. Sorry for any inconvinence. But the point out of my post is that at least there are some things happening, how ever small, with the go window.
Dell now takes you to their home page and after you enter walkman, if you click on the "BUY NOW" link - you'll end up at the Sony USA home page.
Have a great day.
kgr
Some folks are a little nervous with the seemingly never ending downward spiral the pps is in. Well how about some gowindow information to help change those moods.
I know it just goes to a demo site but this is new - walkman -
and I know the complete demo list has now been removed from the header above, but I believe that DELL use to go to Neom's home page - it now goes to Dell's home page.
We all would like to know the status of the word registry / ebay auction etc., hopefully it will be sooner than later.
Have a good night.

Japanese comics go mobile
By Richard Taylor
Editor, BBC Click Online
From texting to surfing the internet and making video calls, the ways in which mobile phones can be used seem to be ever expanding. In Japan, another string has been recently been added to the mobile bow with the launch of electronic books and comics specifically for phones.
Two-thirds of Japan's 80 million people are using their mobiles in ways which would make the rest of us gasp in astonishment.
Here you can use your phone to alleviate many of the more mundane things life tends to throw up, everything from paying for your groceries, to letting yourself back into your apartment.
Catering to the drudge of the daily commute, an entirely new phenomenon is catching on.
You can either while away an hour-long train journey getting lost in a paperback, or alternatively you could bury your head in some absorbing prose on a screen two inches (4cm) wide.
Wireless Watch Japan's Daniel Scuka says: "Japan is a very literate country. Literacy is a lot higher than in many Western countries.
"People read newspapers and novels a lot, they actually consume the written word quite strongly. Certainly you might not be putting on a full 10,000 word novel onto a phone.
"But when you've got shorter stories, comic books, manga, anime, the colour design, something you can actually look at as well as read a story along with it, it's a great way to spend your morning commute."
Mobile romance
The story of the Japanese mobile novel begins in Tokyo's fashionably hip youth hangout of Shibuya.
It was here five years ago that a budding young author calling himself Yoshi gave out leaflets to 2,000 teenage girls. Little did he realise that this would be the spark to ignite a whole new era.
Deep Love, the story of adolescent romance through a chance encounter, was a runaway success. Yoshi made good use of the fact that users could feedback comments, and revised it accordingly.
The story became a legend in its own right, moving from mobile to print and onto the big screen too.
Stunned by the seemingly huge untapped demand, traditional publishing houses and mobile content providers alike have been scrambling for a piece of this novel mobile action.
Today there are a number of sites, where for a subscription of $10 to 15 (£5.70 to £8.70) a month you can download every genre imaginable to your heart's content.
Bandai Networks is one of the largest publishing outfits in this brave new world.
They have their own steadily growing mobile site, with 20,000 users subscribing to a catalogue of 400 plus titles.
Mobile literature
But surely the experience of reading a book on a mobile cannot exactly be easy on the eye?
Bandai Networks' Mahota Asunuma says: "The screen of the liquid crystal display is getting larger so people get less tired than they used to reading books on a phone.
"This improvement is definitely helping the market. Mobile users are becoming used to doing more and more things with their phones, so it's an easy transition to make."
The books are proving such a hit that Bandai is hiring authors to train others would-be writers in the art of mobile literature. One established novelist told me the new medium is creating a new form of expression.
And perhaps more importantly, it is reversing the younger generation's apathy towards reading.
Science Fiction author Chiaki Kawamata says: "A high school student wrote to me to tell me that he read 1,000 books in a single summer.
"There's absolutely no way he could have done that with regular books and without having the novels on his phone instead."
This renewed interest in the written word is also spinning off into regular bookshops. It seems that this could be one medium which, though still somewhat rare, may, in the final analysis, prove to be pretty well done
