Canadian exports to China rise strongly
The Associated Press
Monday, January 07, 2008
BEIJING — Canadian exports to China a growing strongly despite Ottawa's increased focus on human rights that risks irking Beijing, Canada's trade minister said Monday.
Exports rose about 27 per cent according to preliminary figures, International Trade Minister David Emerson said following a ceremony to open a new commercial annex at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing.
“We're starting to the turn the corner. It's not where you want it to be, but you've got to start somewhere,” Mr. Emerson said, referring to Canada's substantial trade deficit with China.
Mr. Emerson said there had been no sign of Chinese retaliation against Canadian business following a recent meeting between Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Dalai Lama — the first time a Canadian prime minister has met with the Dalai Lama at federal government offices.
China reviles the exiled Tibetan leader as a separatist bent on ending Chinese rule there.
Similar meetings between the Dalai Lama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel and U.S. President George W. Bush have drawn political and economic retaliation from Beijing.
However, asked if the October meeting had resulted in specific Chinese threats against Canadian business, Mr. Emerson said: “None that have been directed at me.”
“They've been outspoken about that,” Mr. Emerson said in acknowledging China's irritation over Mr. Harper's meeting with the Dalai Lama.
“(But) I do not believe that it will fundamentally derail the relationship,” said Mr. Emerson, speaking at the beginning of a trade mission to China, Mongolia and Hong Kong that winds up Jan. 11.
Canada recorded a $26.8-billion trade deficit with China in 2006 against an overall trade surplus of $43.6-billion.
“We are of the view that Canada has underperformed over the last 10-15 years in terms of trade with China and our export performance in particular,” Mr. Emerson said.
He said Canada hoped to improve the trade balance with China with agreements boosting air transport, tourism and investment.
Mr. Emerson plans to visit Mongolia later this week, where mining companies have made Canada the second-largest foreign investor.

OK - well at least the phones were up and running LOL
We haven't seen any evidence of anything else. Despite what I was told.
Well I just got off the phone with Aerofoam and the person who answered the phone ( yes someone actually picked up ) stated that the company is still 'up and running'.
He wouldn't expand on that and suggested that I email their investor relations for further.
I will pass on any relevant info.
go out for an hour and wow - my purchase at 0.078 at the open looks like a steal.
Thanks - I got my fill. Now time to sit back and watch the action.
New to this Friday, added more yesterday and have a pre market bid for 40K under 0.08 - hope it catches.
Thanks to all the regulars here and am so glad to have stumbled across this stock. Could make up for a lot of dogs I've had recently.

Hey the dream weavers will just say - 'its a better buying opp. '
Yesterday's volume and 'action' ( for the lack of a better word ) is followed by today's lack of both. What a surprise. Looking like the old 'sounds too good to be true ' is starting to be the case.
All these 'products' and no evidence of production let alone sales.
With the erratic trading , if you want to call it that, and the usual lack of volume , it would be real hard to bail and take my lumps and move on.
Guess I'll give them a little more time.
All these posts on Google - I thought this was worth the read

Symbian dismisses Google Android
By Darren Waters
Technology editor, BBC News website
Google's dominance of the web will not translate to the mobile phone market, a senior executive at Symbian has said.
John Forsyth, vice president of strategy at Symbian, the platform that powers many of the world's phones, said Google lacked experience.
Google has formed an alliance with 33 firms to develop an open platform for mobile phones, called Android.
Meanwhile, the head of Nokia in the UK said the firm was in discussions with Google about using the platform.
Simon Ainslie, Nokia UK's managing director, said: "We are always open to discussion and debate on that. We were not ready to make any commitment to it or discuss it at the time."
"We are having ongoing discussions with Google."
'Very happy'
Mr Ainslie said the time was not right to make any announcement as to "how we can work with them".
He also said that Nokia was very happy with its partnership with Symbian.
He said: "It's the world's most used platform. It's not a simple solution to make a platform work on a mobile."
Mr Forsyth said Google had to be aware that making a "mobile OS is a very specialised form of rocket science.
"It's not search rocket science."
He said the alliance was yet another attempt to launch a Linux-based operating system to drive mobile phones.
"About every three months this year there has been a mobile Linux initiative of some sort launched.
"It's a bit like the common cold. It keeps coming round and then we go back to business. We don't participate in these full stop. We make our own platform and we are focused on driving that into the mobile phone market at large ever more aggressively."
Symbian's recent financial results show it sold 20.4m smartphone software licenses in the last quarter of 2007 and since the company was launched nine years ago more than 165 million phones have been shipped using its platform.
'Deeply unsexy'
Mr Forsyth said there was nothing to indicate that Google's dominance of the web would make it successful as a mobile phone platform provider.
"Search and a mobile phone platform are completely different things.
"It's costly, arduous and at times a deeply unsexy job of supporting customers day by day in launching phones. That's something there's very little experience of in Google's environment.
"if you are a serious phone maker and you are asked to bet your handsets on somebody, you would want to bet on someone with a track record of delivery and support."
Mr Forsyth also questioned whether developers would flock to the system.
"It's very clear what developers want - volume and a stable platform that doesn't keep breaking. You have to have a lot of zeroes in your sales figures before a developer gets out of bed.
"They are talking about having a phone by the end of next year. It's not one that is going to ignite developers."
That's great - and where are they going to manufacture these stone/deck flooring systems. What about orders profit etc., again do I dare say smoke and mirrors ??!! And how goes the armoured car construction............
Crusher
that site is not working - what was the main story
29 10 2007 14:29 ( 2:29 pm )
Seems to have resulted in a little more volume than usual - let's hope this is a signal that their SEC situation has been squared away and they can proceed with their business plan.
While I guess it is to be expected for us to drift lower. With no follow up to PR's, one might wonder just what if anything is going on ?
Just a few questions -
Where are these armored vehicles going to be built?
Has a facility been purchased or is one going to be built from scratch ?
If one has been purchased - how long to retool, let alone how is it being financed.
What about a work force and training for the work force.
Going to sell 140 vehicles in the next 12 months ( JUNE 12th PR ) Please tell us how ???
Have a good day
Grant
Can anyone remember the last time that happened........
LOL - I'm not selling either. After all I'm down so much that last little bit wouldn't really matter. I just don't spend that much time here anymore. Still hoping for a turn around. Just sitting back down - hows the CC going ??
OK Jonesy what did you do ??!!
UK soccer season started today - where is the NOTW and Qode connection..........no where
