IBM ramps up speech technology products and research
By Ephraim Schwartz
June 25, 2001 3:45 am PT
IN THE BELIEF that speech technology is a big, fast-moving, and diverse market, IBM will put its stake in the ground over the next two quarters by giving its portfolio of voice recognition systems a new umbrella term -- Conversational Services.
[n]The company will roll out products that will include speech translation, multimodal interfaces, middleware, natural-language understanding (NLU), text-to-speech, and biometrics.
IBM will soon introduce one of the first products to use visual cues -- such as the movements of the lips and mouth -- to understand the spoken word for speech interpretation, according to Dr. David Nahamoo, senior manager, Human Language Technologies Department at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center.
Nahamoo said the product is already in beta with a number of enterprises and will be available in about two years.
Even longer range, the visual recognition system can be an assist in fixed place environments where gestures can add value. In customer relationship management applications, for example, call center personnel will understand the unspoken mood of a customer by interpreting body language, Nahamoo said.
"The face is sending a message, happiness, sadness, anger. The challenge is how do you model that and integrate it on top of the other [speech] technologies," Nahamoo said.
In the short term, IBM's visual recognition system -- now in beta -- uses a microphone, a camera to monitor lip and mouth movement, and a set of business rules built into the recognition system.
"It might have a policy that if the face is not looking at the camera, the system understands that the person is not talking to me and so the computer can eliminate the sounds as noise," Nahamoo said.
Also, if the lips are not moving but the system is picking up words or sounds, that information is filtered out as extraneous, Nahamoo said.
Some of these technologies will be especially useful in noisy environments, such as a moving car or on the trading floor of the stock market, noted Nigel Beck, IBMs director of Voice Systems.
"If the vocabulary in the system is small enough it can recognize some words even in noise, and can especially be trained for digits in something as noisy as a 10-decibel environment," Beck said.
The system builds templates in time for each movement of the lips and converts the information into the basic ones and zeroes that a computer understands.
The visual analysis is called a "viseme," not unlike a phoneme, the smallest intelligible segment of sound in a word. A viseme is the smallest intelligible segment of a lip gesture, which when put together with other visemes, allows the system to recognize the movements in aggregate as a word.
In other recent developments, last week, IBM officials displayed a prototype add-on sled that will fit onto the back of a Palm handheld. The speech sled contains a DSP (digital signal processing) chip and memory for translating speech to text, and can be used for executing commands to a contact database or appointments calendar, as well as for voice-activated phone dialing.
For dialing out on a handheld device, the system would interact with a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. Plans also call for a PC card version with a speech DSP chip as well.
IBM is also focusing efforts on its WebSphere middleware products. Last month the company introduced its WebSphere Translation Server that can translate about 500 words per second and supports translation bi-directionally between various languages including English and French, German, Spanish, and Italian, and uni-directionally from English to Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
Deustche Bank will be one of IBM's first customers for its translation system, said an official.
In May, the company also announced that the latest version of its Voice Server technology, also server-based, is being deployed by such companies as T. Rowe Price, which is using the technology to answer questions for investors in its Retirement Plan Services.
Because it is impractical to ask a customer to push buttons on a phone keypad when there are more than a few choices, IBM created a NLU call center with a two-way question and answer voice system. NLU allows the customer to drill down to get answers without repeating basic information each time. The NLU system also knows the financial product the customer is talking about from the context of the speech, and includes 30,000 different phrases in this one vertical domain.
Finally, Big Blue is using something called phrase slicing so that users will not have to listen to a mechanized voice that is at times difficult to understand.
Voice models or actors spend five to six hours reading phrases in a specific domain. The words and phrases are recorded and chopped into pieces. Phrase slicing takes the sounds from the pieces and puts them back together to make new words. Although the word was never spoken by a human being it sounds like a human said the word.
Natural Language Understanding, along with interpretation of visual cues and computers that sound human, may mean that one day, sooner rather than later, computers will pass the test invented by Alan M. Turing in the early 1950s to determine machine intelligence.
Turing said that a machine can be considered "intelligent" when a person observing a question and answer session between a computer and a human, without seeing the participants, cannot decide which is the person and which is the machine. For better or worse, we appear to be on that indecisive threshold.

Could e.Digital’s MicoOS be embedded in this product and other DSPs? e.Digital now has top Intel personnel onboard and is exhibiting advanced reference designs as seen the last two years - and most recently at 2001 CES for Samsung and Toshiba. In my opinion, new flash/HDD hybrids and dedicated DSPs are on the horizon. Expect to see more advanced DAPs & PDAs from many of the giant chip makers and Consumer Electronics OEMs as quality emerges with security for Internet music and other content. eDigital is extremely well positioned – Intel’s CEO recently commented that the ‘Pocket Concert’ is format agnostic. The player is also made by Samsung. IMO - this means when/if multi-codec and ‘digital rights management’ issues become needed by content providers, they have access to our MiroOS platform. BELGIUM, BURLINGTON, Mass. -- July 19, 2001 -- Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products NV (OTC: LHSPQ) ('L&H' or 'the Company'), a world leader in speech and language technology, products and services, today announced that its Speech and Language Technologies Division (SLT) has signed a license agreement with Orange, the UK's fastest growing mobile phone operator. Under the terms of the agreement, Orange will employ L&H's award-winning text-to-speech-technology L&H™ RealSpeak™ in its leading-edge intelligent home research centre, 'Orange at home', based in Hertfordshire, England. The research centre serves as a test facility for demonstrating Orange's vision of a world where 'communication and access to information is simple, human and intuitive.'
Under the current research program, L&H RealSpeak for UK-English will be tested to assess its ability to serve as a natural and practical interface between people and their home appliances and systems. L&H's text-to-speech engine will allow individuals and focus groups occupying 'Orange at home' to request information from the centre's home systems (collectively called Wildfire). Wildfire will have the ability, using L&H RealSpeak, to verbally respond to requests in a clear, natural sounding synthetic voice. A basic example of a dialogue that would occur between Wildfire and a test occupant would be: Occupant: 'Wildfire'; Wildfire: 'Hello, how may I help you'; Occupant: 'Turn on the light in the kitchen'; Wildfire: 'Right away'. Using L&H RealSpeak for the voice output, lightening, climate controls, security systems, door locks, audio-visual systems, curtains, baths, and numerous other home appliances and systems are expected to be readily voice-controlled from a variety of Orange wirefree™ devices. More than 50 leading-edge suppliers and partners have provided a range of advanced home appliances and systems, which Orange has adapted and integrated into the centre's wirefree™ home environment. The world's first virtual newscaster, Ananova, an Orange company, is one of many components that have been incorporated into the 'Orange at home' project. Speech-enabled by L&H RealSpeak, Ananova has delivered since April 2000 personalised news and information on demand via www.ananova.com.
"This agreement highlights the multitude of applications for speech and language technologies in the home, where they can serve as a natural interface for information retrieval and appliance and systems control," said Peter Hauser, L&H's vice president and general manager, international and automotive. "Through our agreement with Orange, we are pleased to participate in an exciting and valuable project for the future." Mr. Hauser added: "L&H RealSpeak provides a natural and highly effective voice interface, offering a clear advantage over visual information displays that are often too large to be practically accommodated by mobile or handheld devices like Orange's wirefree™. Also, most users employ these devices while on the go, making key pad entries cumbersome."
Paul Waldron, Technical Architect of 'Orange at Home', said: "The objective of Orange is to point out which value-adding services the next generation wireless technologies can provide. By undertaking research now, and understanding how consumers use interactive services in the home today, we intend to be one of the first companies in Europe to bring to market services that make our customers' lives easier, simpler and better. Using today's technologies, we intend to deliver tomorrow's vision. The high quality of L&H RealSpeak technology meets the ease of use and natural interaction required by consumers for mobile and fixed services."
About L&H™ RealSpeak™
L&H™ RealSpeak™ is Lernout & Hauspie's advanced text-to-speech technology (TTS) that can generate nearly human sounding synthesized speech. It is used in a wide variety of advanced applications, from the creation of voice portals to speech-enabling virtual newscasters such as Ananova and BT's Vandrea. Typical markets for deploying L&H™ RealSpeak™ include: banking, financial, telecommunications, call center and media industries. L&H™ RealSpeak™ technology is currently available in fourteen twenty languages: US and UK English, French, Dutch, Korean, German, Castilian and Mexican Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Japanese, Norwegian, Swedish and Mandarin. The L&H RealSpeak TTS engine has already received a number of industry awards in recognition of its superior technology and capabilities. The engine won the Web software category of the Computing Awards for Excellence 2000 run by VNU Business Publications and the "Best Speech Technology" category at VOICE Europe 99. Other awards include SpeechTEK's "Peak Performance Awards", and the "Best of CTI Expo Spring 1999" Award.

Major Music Labels, Artists and Radio Stations Rush To Secure Their Dot-MUsic
Web Addresses; Free MP3 Player To Be Offered To New Domain Name Registrants at
www.Dot.MU
Business & Entertainment Editors
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 2001--SamsDirect
Internet.MU, Inc. announced today that it would immediately give away
an MP3 player to customers who register a domain name at www.Dot.MU.
Marketed as "the global music domain," dot-mu (.mu) is available to
Internet users worldwide, just like dot-com.
The recently launched www.Dot.MU(sic) is becoming one of the most
talked about domain suffixes on the Internet, especially amongst the
tech savvy 18-34 year old demographic.
Major record companies, artists and their management are
registering high profile web addresses, including: JanetJackson.mu,
Korn.mu, LimpBizkit.mu, DixieChicks.mu, GarthBrooks.mu -- just to name
a few. Artist fan sites like Aerosmith.mu are popping up on a regular
basis, giving die-hard fans the opportunity to express their love for
their favorite bands. Even the names of all-time great acts like
TheTemptations.mu, KennyRogers.mu, BeeGeesOnline.mu, and
StevieWonder.mu have been registered.
Many of the major and independent record labels are securing
hundreds of domain names for multiple purposes. Some labels are
planning to launch sites that will market an artist's music to a
specific audience niche; while others are planning on building
"underground" word-of-mouth sites. Most recently, registrations have
been accepted from Columbia Records, EMI Records, Universal, Motown;
even legendary labels like Decca and Sun Records have registered their
.mu domains.
Some of the world's biggest Internet brands such as Amazon,
Windows, and eTrade have all registered their dot-mu domains in an
effort to protect their famous marks. It is anticipated that some
well-known corporations will use their dot-mu domain site to target
older teens and college students who have discretionary income to
spend. Popular radio stations like KROQ -- the top rated station in
Los Angeles, are also signing on with their own dot-mu domains. KROQ
is owned by Infinity Broadcasting, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Viacom, Inc. (NYSE:VIA).
States David Sams, Co-Chairman and CEO of SamsDirect Internet.MU,
Inc., "The dotMU global domain is being embraced by the major record
labels, artists, songwriters, music educators, students, and radio
stations -- just about everyone makes music their business. Soon our
company will be implementing a tool at www.Dot.MU that will marry the
heart and soul of MP3 technology with everyone's unique IP address."
"We have beachfront Internet property for sale by offering
millions of dot-mu domain addresses," states Renee Sams, SamsDirect
Co-Chair and COO. "We are building an interactive global MUsic
community that's going to give every serious musician a unique
presence that simply cannot be found anywhere else on the Internet
today. Dot-MU is no watered down dot-common domain -- it's a fresh
lifestyle domain that gives the music community and young demo an
independent voice on the net."
Dot-MU is the perfect domain suffix for the word "music" as nearly
every language translation begins with the letters "mu", including:

garnered mass global acceptance include dot-tv (Tuvalu) and dot-cc

ActiveSky, Openwave Bring Rich Media to the Wireless Web
By Michael Singer
Looking to put the power of wireless rich media technology in the hands of wireless Web users, two Silicon Valley-based companies Monday inked a deal they say will boost Internet-ready cell phones and PDAs as well as emerging 2.5G and 3G connections.
The goal of the collaboration is to put San Mateo, Calif.-based ActiveSky's rich media for wireless module devices into Redwood City, Calif.-based Openwave Systems' (Nasdaq: OPWV) Openwave Mobile Browser.
"Our device OEM licensees may use ActiveSky's multimedia platform to leverage advanced device features, such as color displays," says Openwave group vice president Jeff Damir.
The company's software delivers interactive animations, images and streaming video through a simple microbrowser plug-in. Openwave says it will also provide support for ActiveSky to develop an optional multimedia module allowing device manufacturers to add the ActiveSky rich media platform to mobile devices featuring the Openwave Mobile Browser.
"With the addition of rich media capabilities from ActiveSky, Openwave is setting the stage for a fundamental shift to media-enhanced wireless services," says ActiveSky CEO Scott Marquardt. "By integrating their technology into the Mobile Browser, hardware manufacturers have the easiest and most cost effective method of enhancing their product capabilities for delivering these new services."
Openwave says its microbrowsers have been installed into more than 170 models of mobile phones representing more than 100 million units shipped
Philips Speech Processing Announces Support for Intel StrongARM
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 2001---Philips Speech Processing, a global leader in speech recognition solutions, announced that VoCon(R), Philips' advanced continuous-speech recognizer for embedded systems, now supports the Intel(R) StrongARM(TM) SA-1110 application processor.
This will enable integration of speech recognition into devices powered by the Intel StrongARM processor, enhancing functionality and offering greater convenience and ease-of-use for end-users. Support is also planned for the new Intel(R) XScale(TM) microarchitecture, further expanding Philips' portfolio of supported platforms for the automotive, mobile/wireless, and consumer electronics industries.
Philips has successfully demonstrated several speech recognition applications on the Compaq iPAQ(TM) Pocket PC, including continuous-digit dialing and command and control functions. Also, Philips' large-vocabulary continuous speech recognition technology has been ported to the Intel SA-1110 processor, with a demonstration of a large-vocabulary dictation application recently shown on the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC in the Mandarin dialect.

Music labels and Upo strike a deal to promote music through text messaging
Major music labels, such as Capitol Records, Columbia Records Group, Epic Records Group, TVT Records and Virgin Records America, have struck a deal with Upoc, a New York-based software manufacturer, with a view to creating content-delivery platforms, namely a technology that allows the promotion of the labels' new album releases by sending text and audio messages across competing wireless carriers to any mobile phone, two-way pager or wireless PDA.
After that platforms have been built, launched and tested on Upoc's Web site, music fans can decide whether to receive promotional messages or voicemails from music stars like Dave Navarro who may give users a glimpse on their daily life.
According to Gordon Gould, Upoc co-founder and CEO, music fans could also enter contests, start fan clubs, respond to messages and create chat groups though the Upoc Mobile Messaging Platform.
Upoc charges monthly service fees but was open to revenue sharing partnerships, particularly with wireless carriers, depending on the deal.
The deal with Virgin Records America allows to create the 'Virgin Records Urban channel', where it is possible to have updates on artists such as Mariah Carey, Teddy Riley, Ideal, as well as new releases, contests, tour dates and emerging artist updates.
Short Messaging Systems (SMS) technology is quite popular in Europe and parts of Asia but not so much in the United States because of the lack of interoperability between competing carriers, limiting the potential for the explosion of the service.

GM, Disney take Net content on the road
By Rachel Konrad
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
July 17, 2001, 11:20 a.m. PT
General Motors announced an agreement Tuesday linking its satellite communications division with the Walt Disney Internet Group to deliver ESPN.com, Disney.com and ABCNews.com content to subscribers' car stereos.
OnStar's 1.3 million subscribers will now have access to select Disney content, such as ESPN.com's Sports Center Update, by saying "Get my Sports Center Update" into speakers tucked into a vehicle's headliner, the material tucked beneath the car's roof. They may also fill out an online form to receive updates at specified intervals.
ESPN.com programs available to OnStar subscribers include Sports Center Update, Extra Point Commentary, Sports for Kids and Sports Beat Commentary by Brent Musberger. ABCNews.com programs include hourly headline news reports, Sports Scores and News, the World News Tonight audiocast and Bill Diehl's Entertainment News. Disney.com will provide child-oriented fun facts and safety tips.
The expanded content comes as GM's OnStar subsidiary actively researches whether customers will accept location-based commercials from banks, gasoline stations, movie theaters and retailers while in their vehicles. So-called push advertisements, beamed via a wireless network and overriding a driver's stereo system, are becoming part of OnStar's "Virtual Advisor"--an automated, cellular-based concierge service offered as an option on most GM vehicles since January.
Marketing experts at GM and elsewhere say customers will be most likely to accept such ads if they are surrounded by highly desirable, customized content. Revenue from location-based wireless services in North America will increase more than 100-fold to $3.9 billion by 2004, according to The Strategis Group, and GM wants to be the pre-eminent player in the emerging field.
Push ads could also allow advertisers to subsidize and significantly lower the cost of onboard navigation and concierge systems. Although navigation systems and onboard cellular services are relatively common in Japan, American customers have been far less willing to pay for the services. OnStar, which is available on most GM, Lexus, Acura, Audi and Subaru vehicles, costs about $200 to $400 annually.
OnStar began delivering the Disney content Tuesday via the 7-month-old Virtual Advisor, which also delivers traffic updates, news and stock market information over the GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite network. Troy, Mich.-based OnStar also provides automatic notification of air bag deployment to nearby police and hospitals, stolen vehicle tracking, remote door unlock, remote diagnostics, route support, OnStar concierge, and convenience services.
Virtual Advisor subscribers receive customized, Web-based information through voice recognition and text-to-speech technology. Complying with a GM policy forbidding extraneous screens or buttons for dashboard communications, all OnStar services are completely voice-activated and do not require the driver to touch or look at screens or displays.
The deal also help's Disney's Internet unit expand its reach from desktop computers. The program is expected to become popular with sports and news junkies and parents looking for non-obtrusive ways to entertain their children on the road.
"We are always looking for ways to reach our audience in a more ubiquitous manner so that people can access our resources outside of their desktop, in a way that's most convenient for them," Larry Shapiro, executive vice president of the Walt Disney Internet Group, said in a statement.
Movie Studios License Content Protection Technology
By Michael Bartlett, Newsbytes
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A.,
17 Jul 2001, 9:13 PM CST
Two major motion picture studios today agreed to license technology that protects the digital transmission of movies and other video content to private homes.
The agreement was announced by the Digital Transmission Licensing Administrator (DTLA), Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.
The DTLA said it has licensed its "Digital Transmission Content Protection" system, or DTCP, to more than 50 manufacturers of semiconductors, set-top cable and satellite boxes, and other consumer electronics and personal computing products. The DTLA said this is the first license for use of the DTCP technology by major studios.
With DTCP, the studios will be able to protect prerecorded media, pay-per-view and video-on-demand transmissions against unauthorized copying, the parties said. In addition, DTCP purportedly does not allow unauthorized Internet retransmission of video.
The DTLA, also known as "5C," was formed in 1998 by Hitachi, Intel, Matsushita Electric (under the Panasonic name), Sony and Toshiba.
Michael Ayers, president of the DTLA, told Newsbytes that consumers will be the beneficiaries of today's deal.
"It demonstrates that two major studios are jumping up on the stage," said Ayers. "We already had 50 device manufacturers, but now the stage is set for an outroll of high quality digital content."
"Overall, it is a big opportunity for everybody, but the consumers will benefit the most," he continued. "They will get the content they want and devices that will do fun and interesting things with that content."
Ayers said current DVD players do not have digital output - they send an analog signal to a TV set. He said this is because of concerns by the studios, who do not want to put out video content in a form that could be stolen easily.
"It is a three-way balancing act," he said. "On one end of the triangle are the studios, who have a very legitimate interest in protecting their content. The second part is the technology manufacturers, who want technology available at a reasonable price so it allows them to do interesting things with devices to attract consumers."
"The apex of the triangle is consumers. They will decide whether or not to spend money on digital video, video-on-demand, etcetera. Consumers have the final judgment - if we cannot make them happy, then we have all failed. Consumers don't want to jump through too many hoops, and they don't want technology that is too restrictive," Ayers added.
More information on DTCP and the DTLA is available at http://www.dtcp.com .

Trials and Tribulations
7/9/2001. It looks increasingly likely that we are going to enjoy a long hot summer in the UK this year. I just hope I’m not tempting fate too much by writing this, but I’m not the only one who is reticent about spreading good news. The telecoms industry, which has been running a gauntlet of terrible publicity in recent weeks, appears to be reluctant to the point of paranoia these days about announcing developments, which are arguably good news.
Last week, BT’s Manx Telecom delivered its first public ‘in the field’ demonstration of wireless video-telephony using NEC equipment – the company that also supplied video-telephony equipment to DoCoMo’s FOMA trial last month. Now the PR agency handling the Manx Telecom account is well used to dealing with me seeing that it has arranged interviews, sent over art for articles I’ve written about the trial, and generally making a nuisance of myself. But strangely, no press release arrived in my email inbox and none came through on the old fax machine sitting ever so quietly in the corner there, gathering dust.
Now was I being paranoid? Had I been knocked off their ‘key media’ hit list for some reason? Is this what happens when you write negative stories about BT’s subsidiaries?
“No, no, no”, I was informed by the charming PR executive, “You are definitely on our list and we would have sent you a fax.”
Do any telecoms journalists actually use fax machines anymore? I thought it was only hotels and spamming companies trying to get you to buy knocked off computer equipment. What are hi-tech PR agencies playing at sending faxes when surely everyone they deal with is on email? The fax machine is virtually a museum piece unless you work in the catering industry or something like that. (Is this vitriol?)
But I wasn’t being paranoid because another telecoms journalist, much longer in the tooth than I, and far more respected, didn’t get the release either. So what’s going on here? Manx Telecom trying to hide lights under bushels and all that?
Even more startling was the discovery I made regarding a third, and very under-publicised 3G trial. Last week, Monaco Telecom completed its first call over a UMTS network built within the Principality by Siemens and NEC. Up to this point, I and I’m prepared to bet, every other telecoms journalist, was unaware of such a development. Monaco Telecoms did send out a press release but only in French to a few media outlets and even then the details were sparse to say the least. However, it did say that the service – offering full video conferencing, streaming and location-based services – would be ready for testing by actual customers by year-end.
So perhaps the telecoms industry spin machine is taking a novel track down the path to 3G profitability, namely: “Don’t tell them anything and then we sort of accidentally make ourselves look quite good.” This really would be progressive but sort of in the wrong way, no? Silence is golden, so they say, but it also breeds suspicion that someone, somewhere hasn’t got a clue what they are doing

February 2, 2000; WW6 From Technology and Manufacturing Group - Intel Corporation has signed a letter of intent with Rockwell International Corporation to purchase a wafer fabrication facility (fab) located in Colorado Springs, Colo. The purchase will add significant manufacturing capacity for Intel to manufacture flash memory and logic components used in a wide variety of communications, networking and computer equipment. The new Holy Grail for the company is the business of selling flash-memory chips -- used in battery-operated devices that hold their memory even when the device's power is off. Intel is quickly rebuilding itself into the world's largest manufacturer of flash chips.

Today's Internet Audio application is based upon the downloading of digital audio content, either speech or music, via the Internet and then playing the encoded digital audio content on an Internet Audio playback device. Very soon, these playback units will be a sub-system in PDAs, digital still cameras, cellular phones, set-top boxes, and other devices. The total market potential is even larger when you consider other complimentary products such as headphone stereo, personal CD, personal MD, car audio, and future DSC, cellular phone, etc., TI has the commanding market share lead with key design-ins at most of the major consumer electronics and PC makers. The following customers have already been publicly announced: a. Thomson Consumer Electronics b. Sanyo c. e.Digital.

When Will IBOC Arrive?
[This could have eaisly changed by now]
By Leslie Stimson
RADIO WORLD
By this time next year iBiquity Digital Corp. expects some radio stations in the major markets to transmit both analog and digital signals.
At last year’s NAB Spring Convention two companies were developing in-band, on-channel (IBOC) digital audio broadcasting (DAB) systems. Now there’s only one company, iBiquity, which says it has combined "the best of the best" of the systems from former competitors USA Digital Radio and Lucent Digital Radio.
iBiquity President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Struble will tell attendees where his company stands in terms of system-testing, the regulatory process and commercialization at "DAB: How Soon Is Now?" 1-2:15 p.m., Monday, April 23, Room N240, in the Las Vegas Convention Center. The panel, to be moderated by Federated Media President John Dille, is part of the Radio Management Conference.
"We fully expect to have a ton of stations on the air in 2002 and all the major manufacturers to be selling IBOC transmitter equipment at NAB2002," Struble said.
Several things regarding testing for a standards-setting process and eventual commercialization need to happen before this can be accomplished.
iBiquity has development agreements with RF, receiver and chip manufacturers and is now trying to secure manufacturing deals.
Al Shuldiner has been named vice president and general counsel to oversee the company’s regulatory and intellectual property strategies. Formerly at Vinson & Elkins, Shuldiner handled legal work for the former USADR for 5 years.
The company has been focused on field-testing its FM system. Its vans are being used by the Advanced Television Technology Center, which is conducting the tests under the auspices of the standards-setting body, the National Radio Systems Committee. If all goes as scheduled, iBiquity hopes to begin the AM field tests immediately after this convention.
iBiquity has "put the waveform to bed," as one engineer described it, and the company has a good idea of what it will take to transmit and receive the IBOC waveform. In addition, the Perceptual Audio Coder has not yet been integrated into the system. iBiquity hopes to integrate PAC by the fourth quarter of this year. It is currently using the former USADR’s AAC as the audio codec.
Still, many of the tests the NRSC wants conducted to determine if IBOC performs significantly better than analog can be done in the meantime, notes NRSC DAB Subcommittee Chairman Milford Smith.
"There’s a large number of tests, probably the majority, that are not codec-dependent," Smith said. "Tests having to do with ultimate audio quality are codec-dependent. … There will be a subset (of tests) that will have to be redone with the new coder."
iBiquity is planning a live AM demonstration of its system on KSFN in Las Vegas. It will also be broadcasting its FM system on KWNR. In addition, the company plans to have a kiosk in its booth (R1975) with an interactive demonstration of IBOC’s data transmission capabilities and how those will function in its receivers.

Three top Intel people from its Flash/Mobile Divisions are now with e.Digital.
e.Digital was selected by Intel to design and prototype a number of portable digital voice recorders utilizing advanced speech-to-text and text-to-speech technologies. Intel plans to sub-license the reference design created by e.Digital to Intel's OEM customers, referring them back to e.Digital for licensing and any additional design and/or manufacturing work required. e.Digital has also filed a number of trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office; We have received notification of allowance from the United States Patent Office for use: MicroOS TM, FlashBack(R), Hold That Thought(R), Fumble Free(R), SoundClip(R), Smart Song Selection(tm), MicroCAM TM - Micro Compressed Audio Manager, AMIS TM - Audio Manager Interface and TWIRL TM - Two-Way Infrared Link as registered trade names.

Sanyo c. e.Digital.

Sanyo c. e.Digital.

Qualcomm,Samsung, MP3.com To Stream Tunes To Phones
Lest we forget....
Feb 05, 2001 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- Coming sooner than you may have
thought: music streamed to cell phones.
Under an agreement forged between MP3.com Inc. (stock: MPPP) and Qualcomm
Inc.
(stock: QCOM), an application for accessing MP3.com content will be among
those
offered as part of Qualcomm's new Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless
(Brew).
Brew will let wireless service providers offer a catalog of apps that
subscribers can download to their Brew-enabled handsets, much as they might
with
their computers.
MP3.com will provide the lone music application in the initial version of
Brew.
The software, to be introduced in Asia this summer and in the United States
by
the end of the year, will increase wireless transmission bandwidth just
enough
for users to stream music from MP3.com, San Diego, Calif.
Initially, the service will be available to subscribers using phones
produced by
Samsung or Kyocera Wireless, and receiving service from a handful of
carriers,
most notably Verizon Wireless. Gina Lombardi , vice president of Qualcomm,
San
Diego, Calif., said the company will add manufacturers and carriers as
agreements are reached.
Lombardi said the decision to include a music application in its Brew
rollout
was easy given the tendency of wireless carriers to target younger users.
"Music
is one of those applications that will be most popular in the youth
marketplace," she said.
MP3.com vice president Shawn Conahan said Qualcomm's new technology offers
an
ideal wireless channel for a company attempting to foster music listeners'
ability to access their libraries from anywhere. "What we've essentially
done is
follow our own advice," Conahan said. He said the company will provide
content
and services unique to wireless users.
Gartner analyst P.J. McNealy isn't convinced there will be much demand for
the
music application among users of Brew-enabled phones. "I'm skeptical that
anyone
wants to listen to music on the phone," McNealy said. "There's no real
association."
Webnoize analyst Ric Dube said it's a good move by MP3.com, even if the
sound
quality is likely to be pretty spotty at first. "This is a first-generation
product, but it's an important step forward."

It's time to say goodbye...
After much soul-searching and penny-counting, we here at ddmi global have decided to cancel our next event and take a break from publishing new material on the ddmiglobal.com site.
This has not been an easy decision. We have examined all the angles in great detail, but given today's economic environment, along with the numerous issues which are confronting the music industry, we are forced to conclude that we are currently not financially viable.
Our parent company, First Conferences Ltd., has a number of new projects for staff to concentrate on, and these new projects are in rapidly expanding markets, so the opportunity for growth and financial return is much more reliable. Therefore, it only makes sense for us to shift our resources to where they will be more effective.
We hope that the market turns around and that we can once again justify holding an event for the online music industry.
We realize that this will come as a disappointment for those of you who have enjoyed our ddmi global conferences in the past, but we also know that you will understand all too well the reasons behind our decision.
Best Regards,
Patricia Poinsard-Quiddington, Managing Director
and the ddmi global Team

The first big test of DataPlay will come this fall when Borders plans to launch brand-new downloading kiosks that will allow customers to record music on CDs, Memory Stick, and DataPlay. This will allow the mediums to compete directly and give the tiny disks a chance to impress consumers.
