Hi arizona1, the idea of herd immunity is that so many people are vaccinated that the virus has no chance of ..... "going viral".
Adults in our neighboring states are less but still very vaccinated (70%) so our borders arent a factor.
But if you're refering to the very low percentage of african americans who are vaccinated compared to other groups, your point may have some merit.
hi ayock, remember the good old days when our nations medical experts said that when 80% of us were vaccinated we'd reach "herd immunity" ?
Maryland is over 80% vaccinated yet ... the herd is far from immune.
Who thinks that Florida is cooking the books?
Yeah that number is suspiciously low. But the trick is to use the 7-day average to smooth out variations in daily reporting.
By my point is that even highly vaccinated locations like mine arent immune from hospitalization. So far, deaths have not increased past 5 - 8 per day here, but there's usually a 2 - 3 week lag between cases and deaths.
thanks.
for what its worth, super vaccinated Maryland went from 100 hospital beds to 700 in about 6 weeks.
new daily cases went from 100 to 1000 per day during the same period.
now Maryland would have to get to 2500 beds to be in crisis mode, but clearly the delta variant isn't just an under vaccinated red state problem.
I'm pretty sure these numbers aren't correct. May e you should post the source, cuz my take of the CDC data suggests so.e different numbers.
also there's no way vaccination by party loyalty numbers should be trusted.
Hi darron, cities with low income residents who feel they are entitled to nearly 100% support from other tax payers are bound to be a problem no matter who is running the city.
And the only way to stay elected is to continue subsidizing them and tolerating their behavior.
As is often posted here, the poorest, crappiest states in the US are run by Republicans. So maybe it isnt the governance - it's the citizens being governed.
What a changing population means for American politics
The data also shows that the U.S. population has become increasingly concentrated in cities. Nearly all the population growth across the country occurred in urban areas and suburbs, while most rural areas contracted slightly.
This article does a good job with point-counterpoint considerations. As for some Hispanics voting republican, the republican party has done a great job labelling democrats as socialists - if hispanics stop falling for that label the republican party will lose them.
The article also explains why ultra-conservatives are drawn toward conspiracy stories - its a symptom of them losing their political influence. Something I've pointed out before. It suggests the more rural american is marginalized, the more likely they will attempt to exert their political will through violence.

Have you taken the pneumonia and the shingles shots?
Thanks. I finally got them last year. I got them and the flu shot (4 all together) in 3 months. It was my pin cushion Fall, lol.
For the record, I look at Maryland's coronavirus stats almost daily. 80% of adults have had 1 vaccination and I would say 66% - 70% are fully vaccinated. And yet our daily new cases and hospitalizations keep creeping upward. Definitely less than before vaccinations, but certainly not herd immunity like such high vaccination numbers would suggest. It's not very reassuring.
But Al, if red state Trump loyalists kill all the liberals ....
who will do their math for them ? And explain to them that 1/3 is larger that 1/4 ?
I'm gonna put that 60,000 vaccine related deaths into the fake news category.
As for the flu - that's right - it isnt nearly as easy to catch as covid - which is what makes covid so deadly. So the masks may only be partially effective against covid its REALLY effective against the flu.
Which is another reason why I plan to mask up from Nov - March this year. And get a flu shot. And probably get a covid booster shot in January.
Hi Al, this is very sad to hear. But yes when a vaccine company says their vaccine is 90% effective that means it's not 100% effective.
It's the first time I've heard of a vaccinated person dying from Covid. So that's 1 vaccinated person vs. .... 600,000 unvaccinated people.
Maybe he caught it from some unvaccinated person who was infected. Which is the real message here - get vaccinated and reduce the likelihood of infecting someone else.
Hi ayock, I think you either posted to me by mistake or mistakenly posted something irrelevant.
hi arizona1, you really shouldn't post nonsensical stuff like that.
Based in Sudan for a period in the early 1990s, the group eventually reestablished its headquarters in Afghanistan (c. 1996) under the patronage of the Taliban militia.
https://www.britannica.com/topic/al-Qaeda
Well Ayock, you may not remember what happened on Sept. 11th, 2001, but we had to go into Afghanistan displace the Taliban, and wipe out Al Qaeda.
As for Iraq, I never liked the phony excuse for invading them nor did I think invading them while we were still mopping up Afghanistan was a good idea. But as far "losing the war" in Iraq, the jury's still out on that one.
Well if it keeps up, the next election will definitely be stolen .....
by a coronavirus variant !
Hi bbotcs, yes have you noticed that the number of new daily cases seems to have peaked now that mask mandates have kicked back in ? There's a so-called doctor in Indiana who might want to be told this.
As for better treatments preventing deaths, you are right. But I think the statistic on who is getting hospitalized also points to the unvaccinated. And I've also seen that even if youre vaccinated and get covid - so far no one who has been fully vaccinated has died from it. And even if that isnt totally true what is true is the number of unvaccinated deaths vs. vaccinated deaths overwhelmingly points to getting vaccinated.
Booster shots - my family always figured the antibodies would go away at some point and we'd need annual covid and flu shots. We also plan to wear masks indoors from Nov - March from now on whether they're mandated or not.
Hey Al, I just discovered the reason why some people think the election was stolen !
In the 1980s, then-owner A. Alfred Taubman launched the "Third is the Word" campaign to promote A&W's new third-pound burgers and compete with McDonald's smaller quarter-pound burger. Taubman recounted this example in his book, Threshold Resistance. "We were aggressively marketing a one-third-pound hamburger for the same price...but despite our best efforts, including first-rate TV and radio promotional spots, they just weren't selling."
Confused why A&W's burgers weren't able to compete even though the burgers were priced the same as their competitors, Taubuman brought in a market research firm. The firm eventually conducted a focus group to discover the truth: participants were concerned about the price of the burger. "Why should we pay the same amount for a third of a pound of meat as we do for a quarter-pound of meat?" they asked.
It turns out the majority of participants incorrectly believed one-third of a pound was actually smaller than a quarter of a pound.
https://awrestaurants.com/blog/aw-third-pound-burger-fractions
So according to CDC data, on Sept 26th of last year, the 7 day moving average of new cases was 43,000 and the 7 day moving average of deaths was about 600. Yesterday the 7 day moving average of new cases was over 100,000 but the number of deaths was .... about 600.
Of course the reason for the difference ..... vaccinations.

Hey Al, liberal, woke guy that I am, I always felt that a scorned earth approach to Afghanistan would be the most successful one. And I'm sure I posted that here some years ago. Obviously there were numerous reasons why such an approach would not be possible (most of which Afghanistan borders Iran, Russia and China and they would not be pleased with thousands of US troops positioned so near their borders).
So the only choice was to try and help a non-wacko-non-islamic government run and defend their country.
Obviously that didnt work.
So I guess all we can do is wait until we're "9/11'ed" again ..... and push them out of power again for 10 - 15 years afterwards.
well the silver lining is that it gives CNN something to talk about other than the pandemic and the Jan 6th attack on the Capitol building.
hey al, some of their stuff is far better. movie theater quality. they must cost a fortune to produce and I keep wondering how they make their money back on them.
hey am, the reason why you can't find many doctors to agree with him is because he's not telling the whole truth.
but one thing that is true is what bbotcs said which is the vaccine companies are making a fortune off of this.
but if everyone had gotten vaccinated as quickly as they could have there would have been a chance to stop their gravy train in its tracks.
Foyle say so little sometimes. or just makes a face. Michael kitchen did such a great job with Foyle.
and the production, locations, and props. so much hard work to make it look like 1940s England. by the way I think a lot of the show was shit in Dublin until the MI5 storyline which then used Liverpool for 1940s London.
hi al,I didn't even search for this, it came up on my news feed. just like I said, the Indiana doctor said a few things that were mostly true, but for the most part, what he said was not true.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/indiana-doctors-covid-comments-went-212131119.html
hi bbotcs, on a totally off topic subject ... have you heard of Acorn TV ? its basically on demand weta and more. if you have Amazon prime its another $4.99/month. we used it to watch 14 seasons of Murdoch mysteries and are just finishing up Foyles War which apparent was a WETA masterpiece theater staple until a few years ago. Foyle's war is so well done. 90 minute episodes just like the Sherlock series was. if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.
I'm sticking with "angry citizens are voting citizens" and both sides are doing their best to make their voters angry.
which makes us a country of people who are always angry at each other.
Hi Al, the question that begs asking is why would the PA vote count be dependent on the Arizona vote count ?
If there were credible reason to question the PA vote count then it should happen. The only reason to wait to see what AZ comes up with is to see if there's political mileage to be gained by doing it.
hi bbotcs, I'm pretty sure that 270k vote story has been debunked. and the vote counting story also appears to be untrue.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/11/04/fact-check-no-vote-counting-democrat-led-states-hasnt-stopped/6163978002/
I don't understand the refusal to accept the obvious - democrats were able to get out the vote with people who usually don't vote (like they did with Obama) and suburban women overwhelmingly voted against Trump this time.
no one is seriously contesting PA, Michigan, and Wisconsin's vote count, so even if you were to believe AZ and GA went to Trump, Biden still won.
the Republican party should be focusing in 2022, and not have people like Sydney Powell and my pillow guy be the face of the party.
Hey Al, here's one for ya - the number of antimask covid is a hoax believers in Arizona and Georgia who died before the election was greater than the number of votes trump lost by in those states.
Ironic, huh ?
speaking of a total nonsensical waste of time ... how's that Arizona audit going ?
usually when there's a witch hunt, it doesn't take this long to find the witch.
I second that lol.
I think all statues of JFK should be taken down and anything named for him should be renamed. huh, I guess that goes for Clinton too.
lol ! Good one.
Hey Al, it's amazing that he acted this way in the me-too environment he was fully aware of.
Keep your personal life and business life separate - especially if youre aC Suite executive of high ranking government official. He should have obeyed the "Mike Pence" rule.
forced out of office based on non criminal allegations by 11 women. new governor will be a woman. meets the definition of a coup.
you should be happy about it.
I'm just using your definition of coup. in this case 11 women outweighed all those other voters. sounds like a coup to me by your definition.
hi all, I watched the first 2 minutes of it. first he starts out by saying masks don't work. but they do. not 100%, but maybe 80%. but what the masks do is not only greatly reduce the amount of virus coming out if your mouth, they also greatly reduce HOW FAR the virus coming out if your mouth goes.
in conclusion, wear a mask.
as for him saying that vaccinations do t work against desultory viruses and vivid will never go away, he us only partially correct. yes we're probably stuck with this thing and its variants forever. but where he's mistaken is the effectiveness effectiveness. even if you get a breakthrough case, the vaccine protects its you from getting seriously ill. also there were 6000 people at that Provincetown super spreader event. very few people came down with the virus because .... most of them were vaccinated.
I just think its awesome that 11 women could overthrow the government of New York without resorting to storming their state capitol.
Is the video the OAN story that points out that not getting vaccination is the same as being disloyal to Trump ?
WRONG! If Wal-Mart required proof we'd be at herd immunity.
lolol after my 15 minute edit window was over I thought "I probably should have said Amazon and Walmart" !
Cuz youre right.
