Organizations once opposed to a change in Milwaukee's mental health system — including the nurses union and the state's disability rights organization — are now embracing the legislation that passed the Assembly early Friday on an 89-1 vote.
The bill, which won unanimous support in the Senate on March 11, strips the Milwaukee County Board of authority over mental health care policy and establishes a mental health board of medical professionals and others with experience in the system. It is expected to be signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker as soon as next week.

Innovative healthcare solutions
The current health care system is under huge pressure. It is crying out for innovative solutions to help diagnose, treat and prevent illness and deflate ballooning healthcare budgets.
Already mobile apps and connected devices are promising to significantly improve productivity. It is likely more and more health services will be delivered through intelligent hardware and software.
Wellness and fitness applications are also picking up speed.
From the all-too-regular announcements of NHS funding problems and care crises across a multitude of disciplines, it is clear that something has to change. Start-ups that want to change the world would do well to start here.

BtB-2 Launch USA 22 January 2014
.Ultrasis chief Executive John Smith said "This is a significant milestone for Ultrasis and our efforts to target the US market. We have made some headway with the previous version of the program but the US market demands the very latest in technology. We have a number of potential customers who are waiting for BTB 2.0 to be released and looking to contract with U Squared Interactive in the coming months. We have also begun the process of wide scale marketing and have recently released a 'white paper' that details the potential return on investment of using Beating the Blues to treat depression and anxiety within the US healthcare system in conjunction with Open Minds."
He added "We will also be releasing the new application within the UK in the next 3 months and have a number of potential partnerships in other countries now that we have the capability to create translated versions in a much more cost effective way"

The therapist’s couch has long been a staple of books and movies, a place where unpleasant truths are revealed and neuroses untangled. But, almost unnoticed, the delivery of psychological support is being transformed – by the internet.
If you need NHS help for common problems such as anxiety or mild depression, you won’t necessarily meet your therapist face-to-face. You could be at home or even by the pool, typing your emotional secrets into a dedicated instant messaging service. You might be following a computer program that takes you step by step through a CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) programme, or having a digital face-to-face on Skype.

Mental health treatment figures released 17th January 2014.
Of the 535,000 referrals to have ended in 2012/13, 127,000 had initially met the "caseness threshold" when they entered treatment and, of these, 54,000 (43%) had achieved recovery by the time they completed treatment.
The HCSCIC report looks at whether referrals ending treatment have resulted in a recovery from the condition. HSCIC’s chair Kingsley Manning said: "the report has been much anticipated given it provides the first annual snapshot of access to psychological therapies in England for people with anxiety and depression." He also described it as "vital such information is not only collected and published but that it is read and used to help develop services".

Lord Crisp UK parliament.
My Lords, I, too, congratulate my noble friend on securing this debate and on setting the scene so brilliantly. In my three minutes I will speak
only of health, where the world wide web already contributes enormously but where there is much more to come.
The web enables clinicians to access information where and when they need it, which is ever more important in a world where, for example, there are now more than 6,000 different disease entities. It also enables them to consult colleagues. Organisations such as the Swinfen Charitable Trust, run by the noble Lord, Lord Swinfen, and his wife, allow clinicians in even the most remote and isolated locations in the world to consult a network of clinicians in every discipline. The web also helps meet patients’ demand for information and empowerment. For example, there are 27 million views of NHS Choices a month and 1 million patient reviews of services on the site. It also allows for the remote monitoring of patients where, with the whole system demonstrator, the NHS leads the world in terms of evidence-based use of this technology at significant scale.
There is even patient self-treatment. There is an excellent programme called “Beating the Blues”, which is designed to do exactly what its name implies, and I wonder whether this is the first internet-delivered treatment available on NHS prescription. If so, I am sure there will be many more.

Mental health experts call for multilevel strategies to build and improve community-based mental health options.
Community involvement is the key to better, more efficient, less costly mental health care in the United States as parity and the Affordable Care Act take hold, said speakers at a briefing in Washington, D.C., last November.

Major depression affects around 20 percent of people at some point in their lives. The World Health Organisation (WHO)predicts that by 2020, depression will rival heart disease as the health disorder with the highest global disease burden.
While there are many antidepressants on the market, including top sellers such as Prozac and Seroxat, it is widely accepted that many antidepressants work in only half of patients half of the time, and drugmakers are struggling to come up with a new generation of drugs in this field.
