Mexico, without strategic storage of natural gas: Rystad Energy
The winter storm affecting Texas revived fears of the suspension of natural gas shipments to Mexico, a country that does not have strategic storage to deal with the emergency, and that the development of salt caverns remained on paper.
Erick Sánchez Salas, vice president for business development in Mexico and Central America at Rystad Energy, said that the development of natural gas infrastructure, gas pipelines, storage terminals and increased production are areas of opportunity for the country.
Rystad Energy in Mexico
Although the Ministry of Energy (Sener) has classified nine candidate fields for storing natural gas within them, the government is not moving forward on the issue, leaving no strategic reserves of said fuel.
Of the nine fields evaluated by Sener and identified as suitable, six are physically located in Veracruz. The fields are:
- Jaf.
- Obertura.
- Vistoso.
- Lizamba.
- Chilapilla.
- José Colomo.
- Brasil.
- Apertura.
- Papán.
Erick Sánchez Salas recalled that these projects were planned and scheduled, but when the current administration came to power, they were cancelled.
“Mexico has fields, mainly in the field called Brazil, where caverns have been identified that are sufficient and would allow the development of storage infrastructure.” The specialist pointed out that this gives signs that investments by private parties should be stimulated or allowed and encouraged for storage in any of its forms, such as import terminals or in this case salt caverns, and give the government more alternatives for resilience in issues of this nature.
Regarding reducing dependence on natural gas imports by increasing production, this remains the safest option in terms of energy security, but it has not been done so far, “it is something long-term that requires much larger investments.”
“It is very likely that we will see this on a more continuous basis, whether due to the issue of cold waves or the issue that has to do with climate change. We are no longer talking about global warming, it is the extremes, the droughts that affect hydroelectric plants or cold waves that increase demand. When we have droughts, it affects the generation base and cold waves affect demand.

“Other plans are being worked on without being integrated into the portfolio of the state authorities, such as Campo Brasil in Reynosa, with natural characteristics to have energy and have it protected against any national contingency, such as what happened in 2021 ,” he explained. the head of the department José Ramón Silva Arizabalo.

Oh I thought you meant Sergio was key (i was surprised). You meant the other Silva. That makes more sense. I think the new President is key
Is Sergio still head of Pemex Union?
Amazing stat about the Mexico elections..
However, although this year’s election has been hailed as a triumph for women, it was also one of the most violent in modern history, marked by the murders of 38 candidates.
That's crazy!!
Mexican election today
Will elect first woman President
Maybe now Mexico will get going on much needed natural gas storage projects
How many thumbs up did you get?

I'm surprised MRGE wasn't mentioned. I see PCTL was.

Anyone know if Ward is going to this summit next week?
https://www.mexicogassummit.com/
They haven't had much success yet and seem awfully slow with everything, but I do agree there is value here at this range
Good volume today, maybe the rumor is true..
Was that you buying again today?
I think it more just confirms the point that he knew it was really challenging to business in Mexico and he was right
I don't think his father did any business in Mexico. I know he was successful with oil wells in Texas though.
That saying was from Ward's father regarding doing business in Mexico
Mike, what do you think the chances are that Mirage's projects get revived with next administration?
