"City planners think the North River site could be another catalyst development similar to Harrison Square. The development could be anchored by a regional attraction on the north side — perhaps a water park — and would be surrounded by retail space and townhouses. A mixed-use development, more townhouses and a river landing could be included on the south, according to a proposal.
Environmental testing to determine contaminant levels on the land also has been completed. City officials have declined to discuss the test results until a deal is done.”
http://northfortwayne.wordpress.com/2008/06/27/purchase-option-to-expire-for-omnisource-property/
"Taylor could not say if the testing results would have to be submitted to city council, in the event a sale was finalized.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has record of underground storage tanks leaking some gasoline and diesel fuel into the soil there, years ago.
But those tanks were removed and cleanups were completed to IDEM’s satisfaction."

changed his mind since yesterday?
"Barden also wants the ability to sell the other license to a COMPANY that would locate a casino in northeastern Indiana IN or near FORT WAYNE."
I did see that in indystar...I do not believe combining and leaving out a HUGE moneymaker is the direction were headed : )
Sounds to me like moving one and transferring another..
local paper this morning..hmmmm Published: September 15, 2009
"The city of Fort Wayne is also in the mix, with Mayor Tom Henry seeking a similar referendum on legalized gaming next year."
"Barden said Monday he would like to move that license to an underserved area such as northeast Indiana or Fort Wayne. It takes legislative approval to move an existing casino to another county."
"Don Barden, owner of the two Majestic Star casinos in Gary, said allowing him to build a land-based casino closer to existing highways in Gary and relocate his second license to northeast Indiana could mean $50 million in new tax revenue for the state"
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20090915/NEWS07/309159994/1002/LOCAL
i think news is gettin closer...
9/14/09
"Barden and the city say they'd be willing to surrender the second license in exchange for the move downtown. That's piqued the interest of Fort Wayne, where Mayor Tom Henry has dangled the idea of a casino .Legislators who oppose an expansion of gambling might be more likely to consider transferring an existing license."

Hey tex..looks like a little meeting today : )
“I believe this meeting is a good opportunity for legislators to listen and discuss the economic impact moving the casinos WILL have on the Gary community and the entire state."

CALHOUN STREET – TWO-WAY TO BECOME THROUGH WAY TO E. STATE?
Posted by Charlotte A. Weybright on August 15, 2009
The proposed Calhoun Street reconstruction into a two-way avenue provides no solution to the downtown’s traffic problems. The two-block stretch which is to be converted to two-way traffic in a $1,000,000 + project, will restructure the street for two whole blocks. Not much of an area in comparison to the rest of the downtown.
I tend to be one of those “what’s really going on under the surface” people who always thinks there is an underlying rationale of some type. My opinion on turning Calhoun two-way? I believe it will eventually be extended over Headwaters Park to join with its other half on the north side of the river.
If that connection is made, then Calhoun could be extended out to the “new, improved” – depending on your view of improvement – E. State Boulevard sans the curvature. An additional thought is that if the casino somehow becomes a reality, then the extension of Calhoun would bring more traffic to that area by directing patrons to the property in a more direct route. I suspect – like it or not – the Mayor and the private investors are marching toward the construction of a casino as part of the North River project.
Hey – just my “what’s really behind the two-way conversion
just thought I would post a thought/opinion of someone else who lives here who has no investment in this imo.
http://berrystreetbeacon.wordpress.com/category/fort-wayne/
Like I said weekly discussions.. SEPT 13,2009
sure looks like the casino is alive and kickin to me!!!!!
"There is also talk of expansion or moving existing gambling facilities within Indiana, specifically moving one or two Gary riverboats to Fort Wayne."
"Interestingly, he said Fort Wayne development is needed to protect existing state revenue."
“The state (INDIANA) could wake up one day and find out that $300 million of their revenue is gone. It’s time to take a look at how we built this industry and make sure the tools are there to allow us to compete"
" several insiders say Fort Wayne is still the only major untapped market in the state"
"He said casinos are transforming into entertainment complexes with hotels, spas, shopping and restaurants."
hmmmmm....where have i heard of a project like that before?????
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20090913/LOCAL/309139923
I do not think you or I PROVED anything. We shall watch it unfold. Its been unfolding since November or before....
"A casino *IS* coming to Fort Wayne" July 24,2009
http://aroundfortwayne.info/blog/?p=5827
NO...But I will claim to know more than you, if you truley believe the casino is dead. If it was there would be no more discussion about it...fact is there is at least weekly discussions about it .. The fact that the referendum is still being pushed HARD is a tell sign..the public WILL be asked to vote on it...and eventually it will come...
man thats weird it is even mentioned on the UPDATE....
"It is up to our community to speak out if they want a casino in our city. There are many in our community that would like to see a casino"
"we will await the voting results and take appropriate actions at that time"
http://www.summitcityholdingscorp.com/
sure that must be it....
