MONSTER POSSE MOVIE IN THE WORKS?
Posted 2 August, 2008 in Uncategorized | No comments
Hi gang, Greg Boone here again, your favorite, writer, artist to tell you the latest about my comic book “THE MONSTER POSSE”!
Well for the fourth time my comic book series “THE MONSTER POSSE” is being optioned for film/tv development by major Hollywood players. This time it looks better than before because we have the technology to pull off the special effects. I was surprised that several studios were always talking about “THE MONSTER POSSE” but didn’t know where I was. Weird. Anyhow I’ve got several studios asking and we’ll see how it goes. I’ll have to update it but I’m not going for my characters to be altered to the point of unrecognizability.
One thing that pleased me was that two actresses you’re all familiar with were recommended to play the starring role of Rosie, the young woman who is guardian to the Monster Posse kids. Alicia Keyes and Rosario Dawson’s names came up. It’s ironic because Dawson and her family are friends with my best pal Grey of greypublishing.com. I remember Dawson as a wee kid I saw a few times a long time ago. It would be ironic to see her star in the movie. Anyhow, I’m flattered that Monster Posse is being considered again and the original 76 page story is being prepped as an e-book! I may choose the WOWIO site to publish it as good ol’ Scott Rosenberg from Platinum Studios just bought WOWIO and is restructuring it. Fans know that it was Scott Rosenberg who first published “THE MONSTER POSSE” under his Malibu Comics label way back in the early 90’s. New Line Cinema was interested in “THE MONSTER POSSE” then and I ran into a couple of the folks who used to work at New Line Cinema and they told me how much they liked it. Scott also optioned “THE MONSTER POSSE” a few years ago again to bring it to film. So I feel comfortable with Scott and his new venture to show off the original series again.
Recently a lady contacted me about the action model kits of “THE MONSTER POSSE” that she found. She wanted to know how much she should charge for them on Ebay. I wanted to buy them right then and there because they’re of such high quality and rare.
So for now I’ll be waiting and seeing what’ll happen next to “THE MONSTER POSSE”. This time I’m going to be hands on in the development stage to make sure things go right. Stay tuned!

A Brief Anthropological Study: The Comic Fan
August 2, 2008 5:56 pm dforcey Uncategorized
As one of these bizarre creatures, it’s often difficult to obtain perspective on the characteristics of this species, but recently I was given a brief moment of clarity followed by a more astounding follow-up moment. Allow me to share:
Every Wednesday, like most comics fans (Genus: Homo, Species: h. sapiens, Subspecies: h. sapiens fanboy.) I make a pilgrimage to my local comic book store to pay homage to the publishing gods and bring a little joy into my life. My particular alter of worship is a little place called Comics, Inc. in Culver City. The head priest at this particular alter is a man named Steve and his acolytes include a midget, a rastafarian and a man who pretty much personifies cool. Each Wednesday, the midget mans the counter and hurls insults at each person’s purchases, mocking them for wasting their money on the latest X-book or the latest weekly mega-series. Invariably, a crowd congregates around the midget to witness this litany of insults and attempt to add in or rebuff his abuse. This was the case a few weeks ago, when I was finally able to step back from the crowd and observe this bizarre interaction. It wasn’t so much the insults or crowd that turned a light on in my brain (first one in a while, I admit), it was the fact that I was holding in my hands the same books the crowd was ranting about and threatening to burn the moment they had read or, the ultimate retaliation, blog about. Looking down at the books in my hand, on the top was a copy of Trinity #3. Looking at the book in everyone else’s hands, they also had a copy of this book in their hands. It wasn’t that I had enjoyed #1 or #2. Heck, I hadn’t enjoyed 52 weeks of Countdown. I hadn’t even enjoyed 52 weeks of 52. It was then that I realized that the real reason I consumed every weekly book for the last two year, every X-book for the last 20 years and every cross-title summer crossover (yes, even War of the Gods) since Secret Wars and Crisis first appeared on the shelf was that I didn’t want to miss out. I didn’t want to be separated from the pack. I wanted to know what the cool kids were talking about and, invariably, ranting about. It was the same reason I suffered through every episode of Alf when I was in grade school: I didn’t like it, I didn’t laugh at it, but I wanted to be a part of the conversation that would inevitably pop up the next day at recess. Somehow, I’ve left all of that need to be a part of the group behind me in other parts of my life (I’ve never seen an episode of The Wire, I hate Pink Berry, and it took me 3 weeks to see Dark Knight), but it had stayed with me in my comics buying life without me even realizing it was even there.
Now, we all have childhood holdovers. There’s nothing wrong with it and it’s natural. I still watch Barry Gordy’s the Last Dragon, Weird Science and Blazing Saddles on a monthly basis and enjoy all three the same as I did when I first saw them. The problem comes in when we allow it to shape our industry and continue to cast our “votes” (i.e. $$) for things that we simply don’t enjoy, just to be a part of the conversation. I’m sure if you Google the word “bad”, one of the top ten results will be a blog or podcast or review screaming to the heavens how bad Marvel and DC books are and how the state of the industry today strangles independent publishers and makes it impossible to eek out a meager existence in this business. (And I’m not saying I agree with that, there are some really good Marvel and DC books) But the truth of the matter is that each of those blogs or podcasts or reviews paid money to be able to read that book and rail against it. The fanboy subspecies is unique in that it will pay money to be able to complain about something week after week. Restaurant officianados don’t go back to the same restaurant every week in order to complain about it in their column again and again. Car people don’t buy crappy cars over and over so that they have something to talk to their friends about. But every month, the Top 10 comics are invariably from the Big 2 (with a very few exceptions). Does this mean that the ten BEST comics put out every month are from Marvel and DC? I think the average fanboy will tell you absolutely not and insert 2 or 3 of their favorites at the top of that list, maybe even a full ten.
Going back to my epiphany, I looked around at the crowd of my brethren and was glad that a herd of lemmings didn’t rush through on their way to the Santa Monica pier at that instant. I did end up putting back Trinity #3 and that series won’t be receiving a dime from me this year. I grabbed a copy of Walking Dead (which I usually buy in trade) and ended up trying out Invincible and PVP for the first time instead. I actually enjoyed them both immensely and felt much better about it at the end of the day, knowing that my dollars were speaking for quality and not a desire to be in the loop. I encourage my fanboy brethren to do the same.
The follow-up moment I mentioned earlier occurred shortly after Comicon, while reading people online complaining about how much Comicon was not about comics any more and how terrible it was. And yet, somehow, it was sold out for four days and there were quite a few jedis and Marvel Girls walking around that I’m sure weren’t movie execs horning in on “our event”. <sigh> Your dollar is your vote, my people. Let it speak for you more than your blog does. It’ll go a lot further in the long run.
Gonna go watch a little Bruce Leroy right now.
Cheers, Dan.

agreed. Lets hope the budget is enough to produce two quality movies and not take 2 years to get them out. Seems this company is a leader in animation in their country, and dropping the regular movies to concentrate on animation only, so I think they will bring alot of good ideas to the table. Just keep the idea of an Hindi talking C&A cowboys and aliens (no offence people, talking accents not people )off the table "). Not a great idea. Unless this is a comedy.

Just looking at that story, I going to have to speculate. I think one is a C&A film and 1 a Dylan Dog Film. No reason you cant do a Cartoon film first before the live film comes out. 38mil is a nice chunk of change. Dollars go a long way in other countries where films are cheaper to make. I think NM is cheap, but probally not as cheap. London is probally more expensive than NM IMO. Im thinking Since they will make an official announcement in London, that is why I think 1 is Dylan Dog since Hyde park CEO was just there, as we saw in previous posts, maybe filming Dylan Dog? Also, about a studio being built. Part of Platinums plan is to build a digital studio, but doesnt say here. Maybe cheaper over there? It could also be part of Dreamworks plan, we know they plan to move, maybe, or both parties combined. Everyone seems to be getting to know one another. I would expect to see more contracts from the parties involved as time progresses if this is us. Hope Scott like Indian food. HMMMMMMMMMM
This is all speculation of course.

WOWIO Countdown is on!
July 29, 2008 12:00 pm baltounian Uncategorized
As we edge closer to the relaunch of the Wowio website this Thursday, we are getting more and more excited about it. We have had some great response from publishers in both the comic book and traditional book segments and we are looking to add some new categories that will really enhance the offering for readers. The new revenue model should make it very attractive for publishers to add a supplemental revenue stream from a truly global distribution outlet. Some of the restrictions on downloads were self-imposed and others were restricted by pre-established agreements that some publishers had with their distributors. We think we’ve solved that problem with the new ad-supported preview section.
In addition to offering multiple opportunities for distributing content, we are also looking to bring some brand building into the equation here as well. We think our audience will want to see extensions of their favorite brands and so we are envisioning an extended e-commerce storefront where our publishers can offer other wares and products to expand their reach to their readers and fans. Of course, this is all part of the next iteration of Wowio…first, we relaunch Thursday with new features, more publishers, additional categories, and an expanded global audience. We are excited about this new world of possibilities for Platinum, the Wowio team and our publishing partners.
Explore the new Wowio experience starting at 9:00 am PST, this Thursday, July 31, 2008 at www.wowio.com.

It could be very interesting and be kind of fun. Maybe it would mix with Platinum Characters only? Jessica Rabbit is Disney, but we get the jist of it. Interaction is cool.
My only questions, Since we licenced the software, and software is usually quite expensive, I wonder how much this cost us. Will Platinum Studios be listed on the box, located in the ailes of Circuit City Software section, or just on DrunkDuck. If so, I wonder is it a chopped version on DD or the full version, whereas incentive is given to buy the full version.
Brian, maybe you can clarify a little.

I dont think banks are broke, but I heard they are getting picky about giving out loans. Alot of small businesses cannot get them to hire and expand. Really need alot of collateral for a good loan. Since accounts are FDIC insured for up to 100,000, even if the bank goes belly up, were good.
That was the only news I could find, at least for today. At least when it is posted, we may be able to get some confirmation hopefully, but I doubt it until the official PR comes out of Platinum. A lot of things going on. All unconfirmed and thrown into the Rumor bin.

CDI close to Platinum, Radical deal
Hopes to develop films for L.A. comics publishers
By Nyay Bhushan

NEW DELHI -- Film and TV producer-distributor Compact Disc India is "close" to a deal to develop animated features based on the characters and titles of comics publishers Platinum Studios and Radical Comics, the company said Wednesday.
"We are in advanced talks with Platinum and Radical to develop two animation features based on their respective properties, each budgeted at $20 million. CDI will be an equal co-producer in both these projects," CDI Chairman Suresh Kumar told The Hollywood Reporter.
Kumar did not say which properties were being considered but added that the proposals are awaiting final clearance by CDI's board and that he hoped to make an official announcement by the end of July.
Los Angeles-based Platinum owns more than 3,800 characters and comic book properties including "Cowboys and Aliens," which is being turned into a potential 2010 live-action feature co-produced by DreamWorks and Universal, with Robert Downey Jr. in negotiations for the lead.
Carpinteria, Calif.-based Radical owns such titles such as "Hercules" and "Aladdin" and recently confirmed that director John Woo will direct the film adaptation of "Caliber: First Canon of Justice."
CDI would handle animation production for the two proposed features at its facilities with "creative input from Platinum and Radical," Kumar said.
The India-based producer recently signed a $20 million deal with the Latin American Football Corp. to co-produce the 3-D animated feature "Soccer," based on Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo. The film is being planned for release in conjunction with the 2010 World Cup.

Tick Tock Vagabonds timed to strike comic book top ten
By Mike Cox cox-star@sc.rr.com
Greg Robinson of West Columbia hopes to make the top ten in The Comic Book Challenge.
A South Carolina man is trying to win a world wide contest to determine the best unknown comic writer. Greg Robinson, who lives in West Columbia, has made the top 50 for the second year in a row and is trying to crack the top ten this year. He will make a three minute video presentation on his entry and rely on internet voting to advance.
The Comic Book Challenge began in 2006 with entries from 12 countries. Platinum Studios came up with the concept to find the "next Frank Miller." Platinum has comic library property with Dutch, French, Italian, and North American origins, among others.
Their stories have been developed by Disney and Dreamworks, and the website www.drunkduck.com boasts over 20,000,000 hits a month. The 2007 contest was sponsored by AT&T, and the voting increased the network's traffic by 40% during the contest. Jorge Vega captured last year's trophy with Gun Play.
The 2008 contest features entries from 32 countries, and the judges include Scott Mitchell Rosenberg ( Men In Black), Gale Anne Hurd (producer, Incredible Hulk), Brandon Routh ( Superman R eturns), and Kevin Munroe (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).
California based Platinum is using the contest to expose fresh talent and build their position in the industry. In today's world, the male dominated comic book industry is massive, and fuels other media; movies, television, websites, and mobile are all affected by the comic industry.
The contest places Platinum at the forefront of the industry and also gives exposure to new artists who might not have another way to get their talent in front of such a large audience.
Greg's 2008 Comic Book
Challenge entry is titled Tick
Tock Vagabonds, a story set in a magical game world land called Tick Tock. Children from all walks of life come together and compete in a central playing field surrounded by living quarters. The field is composed of interchangeable disks; each one contains a unique obstacle.
The story begins with Tick Tock powering down for some unknown reason. A robot named Dodger is sent through a time warp to find the one person who can restore order to the magical place.
The maker is sucked into the time warp and replaced by a sinister man called the Baron. He takes over Tick Tock, and it is up to Dodger and three young classmates recruited from our time. They call themselves The Vagabonds.
Greg has been married for nine years. He and his wife Maria have a six- year- old daughter, Alexandra. He has been writing comics for four years. His first published work was Underlords. Greg is currently working on a screenplay with the Screen Writers Agency.
The panel of distinguished judges will narrow the entries from 50 down to ten finalists. In early August, these finalists will be announced on the website, www.drunkduck.com. Voters will take over and reduce that number to three. Another vote will decide the 2008 winner.
Greg Robinson is hoping to see his name listed among the finalists and would love to write another story about how a West Columbia man overcomes all odds to win a prestigious contest and achieve fame and fortune.

* Guess we know who the judges are. 20 million hits at Drunk Duck per month? No way of knowing for sure. IMO. PUT A COUNTER ON THE SITE and on WOWIO.
TOP COW ANNOUNCES ‘THE MAGDALENA’ ACTORS JENNA DEWAN AND LUKE GOSS TO APPEAR AT THEIR SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON PANEL
‘THE MAGDALENA’ MOVIE
Meet the stars of the upcoming film based on Top Cow’s holiest character
LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 23, 2008 – Top Cow Productions Inc. announced today that actors Jenna Dewan (“Step up,” “The Grudge 2”) and Luke Goss (“Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” “Blade II”), who were recently announced as starring in a movie based on The Magdalena comic series, will appear at the publisher’s panel on Saturday, July 26 at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about their involvement with the project. In addition, the actors will sign “Magdalena” posters at the Top Cow booth (#2329) after the panel. Dewan will also appear at the Top Cow booth on Friday for an hour-long signing.
The Magdalena is a Top Cow comic series about a generational line of female warriors descended from Mary Magdalene who have been charged with protecting the Catholic Church. Each generation’s Magdalena warrior is handed down the Spear of Destiny to use as her weapon. The current Magdalena is Patience, who has clashed with her superiors at the Vatican and so has removed any allegiance to them, though she still acts to fulfill her mission as a Holy Warrior.
Dewan is set to play Patience, while Goss will play Kristof, an agent sent by the Church to act as Patience’s trainer and mentor.
“The Magdalena” movie is produced by Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Motion Pictures, Platinum Studios and Top Cow Productions.
