Is there any way that I could dig up the bigger/flower producing lilac and move it? It's so ugly and such a pain to work around when mowing, etc.
Lilac questions...
Our area is known for their lilacs and we even host the Lilac Festival each year. We have two lilacs in the back of our back yard. Both are under the shade of a big oak. I'd guess that both have been here for many years (at least as long as we've lived in the house AKA 3 years).
One of them is very very sickly looking. It might produce 2-3 flowers each year. It's an eyesore, and I'd love to pull it down. Does a almost dead looking lilac have a big root system that will be a pain to pull out?
The other one is definitely in better shape, in terms of flowers, but it is leaning almost parallel to the ground. It is on the side of a hill, but I would assume the main reason is that it is trying to find sun out from under the big oak. What can I do to get this pretty mature lilac to stand straight up and look a little better. If it can't happen, I'll just pull that one up too.
What do you guys think?

A couple of questions for the experts...
I'm a zone 6a guy. I'd like to plant a little veggie garden. Am I too late to plant some stuff now? We just had a frost last week, but I bet that was the last one.
We're going to be having a baby in the next week or so, so I was thinking about using my time off from work (and during the baby's naps) for doing a garden. It wouldn't be big at all...maybe 8 feet wide by 6 feet deep. I would put it in the back yard against the back of the house next to the deck.
If it's not too late, any suggestions on what I could plant? I'm thinking tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and peppers...but I'd like some more veggies if I can grow them this late in the year.
Also, we have a lot of dear that like to rome through our back yard. I was thinking about building a fence for the garden. Can I use pressure treated wood for the fence or would that be a bad idea because I'm putting the wood near vegetables that I'm going to eat?
The account is looking pretty good today...thanks to whoever decided to get ripped off on those 100 shares.
I'm glad you asked, I was about to ask the same thing.
SSK...what's the reasoning behind not being allowed to double down in the first two weeks? What's the reasoning for the different treatment between double downs and all other trades?
Like what?
Can we at least get a 10 PE? They continue to do very well.
And overshooting to the downside is where you really make the money. I think (at least I hope) even Len has to say there are going to be a lot of good oppotunities in real estate over the next few years for people with a long time horizon.
All right Len...
Where am i at? I've done pretty well the last few contests and I still can't make it into the top 40. I've got to be getting close.
Pretty sweet Laz. Like I said...I'm just in the learning stage now. I like the idea of getting income from the property, but maintenance is a big deal...especially when I would probably buy out of state (taxes in NY are way too high to make any money...at least from what I've seen so far).
I'm hurting to buy some real estate...
About once a month, I check a foreclosure auction website to see what's happening lately. I have a baby on the way in less than a month so diving into something new like this would not be wise, but I'm trying to learn in anticipitation of buying in the next year or so.
Well, I missed what definitely appeared to be the best deal that I've seen so far. There was a foreclosed lot in Sarasota (.83 acres) on a country club surrounded by houses that were (tax) appraised for $300k-$400k. The highest bid was $11k on the lot. I think that if I could have bought it and sat on it for 5 years, I probably could have netted ~$40k-$50k.
What do you guys think? Do you think buying land is a better idea for a new guy like me? Or should I buy to flip? Or buy to rent it out? The mortgage on the lot would have been less than a cable bill.
I just voted my proxy. I'm voting against all directors. Like you say findit, I've been in this thing for 5 years (since the XTRN days), and nothing has happened. The management is overpaid and they could really care less about the shareholders.
Nope...I live in NY
What haircut?
I get my $.09 every quarter.
That's the plan. I don't even care. I'll just keep pumping oil into the Saturn until we find a good deal on a bigger car and we'll let the Saturn die. I'm glad to finally get rid of it.
I'll definitely let you guys know before I buy.
My 97 Saturn
I've talked about 97 Saturn on here many times. Well this may be the last.
I took it in for some engine work in December so that I could pass state inspection ($400).
I then took it in again in March for a valve cover gasket repaid ($350).
I took it back on Tuesday because I was getting an oil leak. There was a pretty decent amount in the garage floor. They tightened everything up with the valve cover gasket again and cleaned it all up and set me up for an appointment this morning. They call me an hour ago and tell me that the piston rings are shot and they want to do a complete engine rebuild for $1600. I said no way.
I'm now looking for a new car. I'll probably just keep pumping oil into the Saturn until I get the new car and stick an oil pan underneath in the garage. I want a 3-5 year old midsize import (Nissan, Toyota, or Honda), but I think my wife wants an SUV for the new baby on the way. We'll see what happens.
When is the deadline for PSL12?
Lawn rolling...
I was thinking about getting my lawn rolled. Are there any benefits besides having a yard that is less bumpy? I have .41 acre. How much should I expect to pay? I would assume that it doesn't matter who does the rolling and to go with the cheapest price, right?
I need to plant grass seed in one shady part of my lawn. Should I plant the seed before or after the lawn rolling is done?
Also, my yard is really soft in one part. It's dry, not muddy. It's an area about 15' x 10'. It's really torn up, and the grass doesn't look nearly as good as last year. Could I have a creature causing the softness in the ground and the poor grass? Will rolling the lawn take care of the problem?
Thanks for the update Hank.
Pretty good earnings today too! They've returned to profitability and these lawsuits seem to be close to ending. It may be time to jump back into OPCO.
I know everyone is trying to help me out. That's why I come back to this board so often. I probably have as many posts on this board as anyone over the past two years.
I just don't want people to think that I don't care what they say, because I do care. I've learned a ton of stuff from this board over the past two years.
That's why I highlighted that he was an independent insurance adjustor. His job is to make sure that the consumer gets as much money out of the insurance company as is needed to totally fix the problem. He even came and looked at the kitchen himself and said it was too small of a project for his company to get involved with.
That's my big problem with this whole conversation. You guys are looking at pictures of the kitchen, but I had 4 contractors come and look at it in person, and not one of them said I needed a new header. They have incentive to tell me that I need a new header (especially since I led the conversation that we'd probably be going through home owners insurance) and charge me all they want.
None of them did that, so I feel like it must not be a problem. The two highest bids, I believe, were very well-respected contractors that were given to me by a 3rd party independent insurance adjuster. If it was a problem, they would have noticed it.
Same question goes out to Phil too.
Forget getting the caulk out in the hard to reach places. I can't get this Geocel stuff in the easy to reach places! This stuff sticks all right...and it aint coming off! Even with a razor blade/utility knife.
BnB...
So now I'm at the point where I need to trim the excess caulk with a utility knife...what do I do about the places where I can't get to with a utility knife?
Refer back to post #8474 to see what I'm talking about. At the top of the picture, how do I get between the metal and the marble with a utility knife? The marble opposite the metal has to be caulked but I can't get in there to cut away the excess (and there's a good bit of excess in there).
It's been a rough couple of days.
Cowboy...
I don't know if the sliding glass door was put in when it was built in 79 or after.
As far as I can tell, there is no sinking floor and the wall is not pulling away from the floor.
If this were really a problem, I would think that the contractors have an incentive to let me and charge me as much as they wanted. None of the 4 estimates said anything about the issues you are bringing up.
Thanks...you've really made me feel a lot better!
NOT!
The ceiling dips (some) along that joist the whole length. No way I'm taking it out. I'm sure I'll get some backlash by saying that, but I'm not going to live in this house forever. It can be someone else's problem later.
Who called buying a home an investment anyway? (I don't really believe it is, but hopefully people reading my stupid stories-heat pump, bowed header, etc. etc. etc.- will re-think that if they've heard that phrase in the past.)
I've had plenty of those too.
Another question from that idiot beigledog...
I just waiting for you guys to give up on me. I can't believe you haven't yet.
So I'm trying to go without the tape. How do you get a good bead of caulk without it coming out in clumps? Because it's coming out it clumps, I have a lot of excess and therefore I'm going to be using the razor blade alot when I'm done. Am I doing something wrong here?
It's been a rough day.
I don't see the bow in the header any more either. He was able to move it up about 1/4 (maybe more) and drilled some screws in it to keep it up there.
excel...
You found my concern. It doesn't look flat to me (in person) either. Below I've tried to explain what happens with a level.
I understand that he's putting drywall on an otherwise plaster wall, so it may not be perfect, but I'm not too impressed. What should I do?
What funky flashing? They took the flashing out from above the shingles and put it underneath (along with ice and water shield) the shingles.
excel...
No, water did not travel down the sides of the door. Pretty much straight down from the middle of it.
Drywall was replaced on the ceiling and the wall above the door. Both pieces were about the same size (to put it in perspective).
Updating about the kitchen and roof. The contractor started on Tuesday with putting up the drywall. Yesterday he threw a coat of mud on it. This morning he threw another coat of mud on it and did the roof repairs. He's coming back tomorrow to paint. He told me that the window sill in the picture below is totally rotted out.
Here are the pics of the work so far. Let me know what you guys think?
First a couple of close-ups of the drywall work.
Next a couple more from farther away.
Finally, the roof.
I'm not sure if I've told you guys this, but one of my good friends from college is Rory Sabatini's nanny (for his kids, of course). She's walking the course with him today probably. How sweet would that be!
I tried to tell her to get me a job, but male nannies typically don't happen I guess. haha.
I missed it again. We need earlier reminders!! haha
I got the robe out by using a make up mirror and working the string that was hung around the agitator in all different directions. It took me about 30 minutes, but I finally got it off.
I never got the cap off of the agitator though. Oh well. I probably would have broken it anyway.
I'll try prying it off.
Now how do I get that cap off?
I've searched on google and I can't find anything except "remove the cap on the top of the agitator."
